    2. Andrew Murray Shannon
    3. I am trying to find more details on my ancestors, John SHANNON and Martha McLURE which have eluded me. They had a son Hugh born in Londonderry around 1822 who is my g.g.grandfather. Information is very sketchy and I was hoping someone out there might be looking at this family and their ancestors who may be able to help. Andrew

    3. Jean: while I am not as enthusiastic as you are about photographing old churches, I have been doing the same. My basic research takes me to Franklin Co., Pennsylvania, USA. This is the area of early Ulster Scots settlements. They were all Presbyterian Covenanters and quickly established their churches. The originals were all log houses, but as they could afford it they build plain brick churches. Most have cemeteries which is my primary interest. Rocky Spring holds Capt. Alexander Culbertson who fought in the French & Indian war and was later killed in a battle in the same war. Both the church and cemetery date back to 1734 and continued in use until 1934. It is maintained and in very good shape. The same applies to Moss Spring Cemetery where my ancestors are buried, it is maintained by the current Presbyterian Church and the town itself, even the stones have been restored where possible. 3. I am trying to find baptismal records for Thomas Phillips' three children: Mary born abt 1857, Margaret born abt 1859 and Esther born abt 1862. I am not certain this Thomas of the Parish of Maghergall is the correct one--but if I could find these records there that would confirm it. I believe they were Roman Catholic. His wife's first name (mother of children) was Hellena--sometimes Lena. I do not know her maiden name. The children's baptismal records might show this. Can someone give me guidance as to how I might find these records. Any help most appreciated. Joan PHILLIPS Eddy Tucson, AZ

    1. St. Saviour Cathedral, Lisburn
    2. I found the following in Lewis' "Topographical Dictionary for Ireland" for Connor Parish: "The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Connor, united, with part of the rectory, by charter of the 7th of Jas. I., to the rectories of Killagan and Killyglen, and the vicarage of Solar, which constitute the union and corps of the prebend of Connor in the cathedral of St. Saviour, at Lisburn, in the patronage of the Bishop; the remainder of the rectory is impropriate in Viscount Ferrard." As I am researching the MAXWELL family found in Grange of Killyglen, does the above mean that I should be searching in the St. Saviour church at Lisburn for BMD records? And am I correct that this is Christ Church? If so, does anyone have access to these records or are they online? Pretoria Maxwell Michigan

    1. Irish Local Names Explained - Vocabulary of Irish Root Words

    3. This may be a useful resource to those researching Ireland Best Wishes Don in Melbourne AU IRISH LOCAL NAMES EXPLAINED - Vocabulary of Irish Root Words By P. W. JOYCE, LL.D., M.R.I.A. This volume is a key that will help to open many locks. It contains a vocabulary of the root words from which Irish place names are most generally formed. It also contains a considerable selection of those names that are best known through the country, and which best exemplify the use of the root words. By the aid of the roots and examples it will be easy to discover the proper forms and meanings of hundreds of place names not mentioned in the following pages. Now that an active interest is being taken in the native and correct forms of our place names, this little book cannot fail to be of practical use. Should more exhaustive information on the subject be desired, it will be found in The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places by the same author. 1. Antrim placenames & Ordnance Survey Maps
    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. In Ireland, placenames changed and townlands were re-assigned to other parishes at times. This was most likely the same the world over. This page has been created for two reasons : 1. to offer altrnative placenames and parish names to those who seek a place name that they have not been able to find anywhere else 2. The Ordnance Survey sheet numbers as listed in the 1851 census, equate for the most part (see Note), to those listed in the Griffiths Primary Valuation returns, and as such, with these numbers we can identify the map that the townland is to be found on. Note: In some cases, when there is more than one sheet number given in the 1851 listing e.g two sheets, then there is only one sheet in the Griffiths listing This page has been compiled using a number of references. It is *NOT* a reproduction of the web site that some of you may know as the Sean Ruad Atlas, whilst the book used to create the Sean Ruad Atlas 'General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns, Parishes and Baronies of Ireland' (1851), is one of the references used to create this page. Other references used include 'Townlands in Poor Law Unions', 'Lewis Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837', Tithe Applotment Books, Griffiths Primary Valuation and placenames as listed on civil registration record http://www.from-ireland.net/griffiths/antim/antrimordnos.htm
