    3. Especially for Jean McCarthy and for Paula - My own male ancestor from Antrim, Archy Wiseman (1813 -1853) left there in 1833 (from Ballywatermoy Townland in what was then Ahoghill Parish), with a lady who I presume may have been his wife (even though he was only 20 years old). The 1833 Ordnance Survey for Antrim County states that he (and she) were "bound for America." However, he and his companion /lady/wife/sister (?) did not ship out to New York from Liverpool until 1836, so I have assumed that they had to work somewhere in order to earn the transatlantic passage money. They arrived in New York, and the next thing I know about him is that in December, 1838, he had married an entirely different lady in Newburgh, NY, where his older brother and the brothers' family had already settled. This later union is one of the many ancestral connections ultimately that have permitted me to exis today.t. Where Archy worked to earn passage is unknown, but it surely wasn't back in Ballywatermoy. Bob Wilson Stamford, CT The Bark "Lanark" brought A. Wiseman from Liverpool in 1836. The ship "Adam Carr" brought the J. McNeals from Glasgow in 1845 The ship "Macedonia" maybe brought J. Gaffney from Liverpool in 1846. The ship "Underwriter" brought C. Cavanaugh from Liverpool in 1853. The M. Redmonds came over from County Wexford to Illinois in 1850. --------------------------------- Yahoo! FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click.

I am searching for my G-G-Grandfather, James Knight. I know he was in Liverpool in 1851, because that's the year he sailed for NY from Liverpool. I would be most interested if he appears in the 1851 census. There was a "Mary" Knight listed just under his name in the Ship's roster of names, and I have always wondered if this was his sister. Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to transcribe this 1851 census, it is important because many of our Irish ancestors were in Liverpool, trying to earn passage money for the US. Thanks again for this great project! Paula

    2. 1851 Census Index Liverpool—Irish born on my web site at the link below. Alternatively type Jean McCarthy into the Google search engine for a direct link. I have added very many more records to the Index for the 1851 Census for Liverpool Irish born people. This is rather a large project which will take time to complete. Especially as particular attention is being paid to accuracy. So far the full Introduction of the Index, explanatory notes and abbreviations, Chapman Codes as well as all the surnames beginning with A has been transcribed. Since then I have been working non-stop on transcribing the surnames beginning with B. There are a great number of them so it is taking longer to complete this section than I had anticipated. However, I have now posted all the surnames beginning with B that I have transcribed so far. (BAC to BIN) I will endeavour to transcribe the entire Index as soon as possible. I hope this helps at least some of you with your research. Kind Regards. Jean McCarthy nee Moore. Staffordshire, England. 3. To Sharon, re: HATTON - Keep in mind that, at least in the middle of the 19th Century in Antrim, there was an Ahoghill "Parish" as well as a village/settlement of the same name. For example, ancestry in my WISEMAN line can be located in the "Townland" of Ballywatermoy in Ahoghill "Parish" back in the 1830's, but more recently, Ballywatermoy is listed as being in Craigs "Parish". I assume that at some point, the Parish boundaries were redrawn. Bob Wilson Stamford, CT, USA . Sharon <sar5r@yahoo.com> wrote: Does anyone have access to the 1900 Ahoghill census? 3. Greeting All , My first 2 Irish male ancestors that came to America in their early 20's . . . John 1871-72 via Quebec & Geo 1907 via NYC. Both sets of parents were b. Ire as was John b. 1848. Geo was b. 1887 Eng. Geo lived in Yorkshire, No.Eng and sailed from Glasgow. John sailed from Glasgow while his sister Eliz. sailed to Amer. 1895 via Queenstown, Cork, Ire to Liverpool, Eng and then to Boston, US. All the ship info matches well for John & Geo (b. year , farmer etc,) except for nationality of Scotch. I'm pretty sure these are my correct ancestors. I suspect that either 1) agent just assumed and wrote down Scotch for McKenzie or 2) it was less of a problem at the time to give Scotch not Irish to sail etc. Does anyone with similar immigrat. info have other experience and/or explanation(s) ? Or was there a more specific reason one would give Scotch not Irish ? TIA . . . all the best , Walt -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 1. 1851 Census Index Liverpool—Irish born
    2. 1851 Census Index Liverpool—Irish born on my web site at the link below. Alternatively type Jean McCarthy into the Google search engine for a direct link. I have commenced transcribing the Index for the 1851 Census for Liverpool Irish born people. The index not only gives the surname, folio number & piece number in abbreviated form i.e. 2176/1 but also includes the given name. occupation and place of birth. In the case of entries from piece no's HO 107/2186 to HO 107/2193 the age has also been included. This index is a listing of those people who gave Ireland, an Irish County or an Irish Town as their place of birth. It does not include other family members in the census returns who were not born in Ireland. To find family members born elsewhere then reference must be made to other LDS Census Indexes or PRO films. The indexed Piece No. and Folio for the Irish born person will make this step easy. The Piece and folio numbers will give the LDS film number if a search of the full census is required. This is rather a large project which will take time to complete. 1. Lost in Oz

    3. James CAREY, Lost in Oz - but not forgotten And if you come, when all the flowers are dying And I am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me. A gravestone in the RC parish cemetery in Dunloy, County Antrim, N. Ireland bears an inscription which begins “Erected by John CAREY in memory of his beloved mother Margaret CAREY who died in 1903 and his father Richard CAREY who died 1908 aged 81 years”. It ends with “also his uncle, James CAREY, who died in Australia in 1889, aged 72 years”. As Richard CAREY was my maternal great grandfather I enquired about his brother. No documentation remained about James CAREY so the date he sailed on (and with whom) the ship which carried him there and from whence, its port and date of arrival, what he worked at or where and the site of his grave, are all unrecorded. Oral history recollects James as arriving and living in Melbourne as a bachelor and, before he died, willing his property to his relatives at Glenbuck Townland, Rasharkin Civil Parish, County Antrim. Eventually, subsequent to probate, some £800 pounds was allegedly transferred to Ireland (around £60,000 - $Au 143,241.76 in 2005 terms) and distributed among his nephews and nieces. This injection of funds (and possibly previous sums) allowed the family, back home, to invest in businesses and farms and laid the foundation of their subsequent prosperity. One of his nephews, John Carey used his share to buy a farm in Gortgole (Rasharkin) about 1912, and his niece Ellen, (my grandmother), used her portion to purchase a leather workshop and two shops in Ballymena (Co. Antrim). Several family descendants are millionaires, some several times over and one is a Papal Knight of the Order of St. Gregory. Many others have succeeded in commerce and the professions and some have scaled the heights of academia. At least 7 entered and served in the priesthood throughout their lives at home and abroad. Their genealogy can be viewed by typing “Postman Bill” into the Google search engine. Death certificate requests to the various Australian states (except Tasmania) and a search of the Oz probate records by Genfindit did not yield any positive information. Efforts by various kind Aussie E-list members were to no avail. James left an impoverished Ireland for Australia in the desperate times of the1846-1850 potato famine. His subsequent lonely efforts down under fueled the progress of those he left behind and they represent a disproportionately large contribution by an individual to the prosperity of his relatives. A number of Carey descendants are now living in Australia. These and any visitors from back home would like to visit James’s last resting-place. They could kneel there among the microlaena grass under the Eucalyptus trees and intone an Ave for the repose of his soul. And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me I'll simply sleep in peace until you come to me. I've been searching for my James Crawford's family in Armagh, but I have no proof of where he was born. I just have a 2nd marriage registration that states he was "from Co. Almagh." That is the way it is written on the record, Almagh and it doesn't say "where born", just "where from" and to me that could be open to interpretation. Presumably it was destroyed in the Blitz of Belfast in World War II. I expect confirmation of this shortly. Thank you so very much indeed Joan for sharing these wonderful pictures with us all. 3. The Chief Constables of the police force were required to write reports to their superiors on incidents in their localities. These reports are called 'Outrage Reports' and while not all are extant, some are and stored in the National Archives of Ireland. In these reports, we find the names of people who lived in parishes - the offenders and the victims - we find different spellings for townlands than we are normally used to. So, I've uploaded a page with some Antrim Outrages for December 1835 and January 1836.
