Thank you very much Ray for the info about John Armstrong. Don't know if that is our John Armstrong, but it does give me a reference to study. Ray Jones, I am interested in McKays, too. Where did your McKays live and when did they go to Canada? Deb Logan Pittsburgh
Question for Gordon Crooks - The "Heads and Hearths" book 1660-1669 for Antrim...is it indexed by family name? I'd sure like to know if there is anyone named Wiseman listed in that time period. My Wisemans were in Ballywatermoy, Ahoghill (now Craigs) Township by 1800, but there seems to be some mystery as to when the first Wisemans are recorded as having come to Antrim. The earliest reference I've been given is for the name appearing sometime in the early 18th Century in Carrickfergus. Some say that the first Wiseman in Ulster was a Dutch or German mercenary in William of Orange's Army, and others say that the name in Ireland originated from Wisemans who lived in the North of Scotland and once had had some association with William the Wallace. Rolls of Honour—on my web site at the link below. Alternatively type Jean McCarthy into the Google search engine for a direct link. I have added another new page to the Rolls of Honour Page. Colleen in Canada has very kindly sent me a photograph of the war memorial at Kildollagh Presbyterian. Church, in the Ballymoney, Co. Antrim area. Thank you so very much indeed Colleen for sharing this great photo with us all. Another very kind lady (Margaret) on her recent holiday to Hobart Tasmania very kindly took photographs for me. The photos are of my great-grandmother’s (Jane Bowden nee Spratt) grave in Hobart Tasmania. I am deeply indebted to Margaret for her selfless act of kindness. Thank you so very much indeed Margaret. I realise that this is not of any interest to you all but Margaret also brought me the cemetery plan and graves plan of the Cornelian Cemetery in Hobart. Sorry if this is off topic but I thought it might be of interest to some of you as I have noticed quite a lot of Irish names (including several instances of my own maiden name of Moore) on the grave plans. I have put these images onto my web site on My Tasmanian page. I have deliberately made these images large to facilitate easier viewing of the names, so sorry if you have to scroll around a bit. Hi list, I have a tough Irish/ Northern Irish Seymour research problem. I have been at this Seymour research for about 10 years now. Slowly, I think I am making very gradual progress. Anyway, I am seeking information about a Seymour family who left Ireland or Northern Ireland in about 1882 or 1883. The parents died on the trip to New York. It is believed that both parents died from consumption (TB). When the children arrived at the port, they were sent to an orphanage. We believe that orphanage to be the New York Foundling Hospital. It is believed that one of the children (Laura) was sent by the New York Foundling Hospital with the infamous Mr. Larry Curran on an orphan train to Iowa. Laura was adopted when she was about 5 years old. I do not know this Seymour family's county of origin or port of departure. I realize that this is a big hurdle. The family was composed of four members: ________ Seymour (Husband) and Fiona _______ Seymour (wife). With them, they had two children Laura Seymour b. abt 1881 (first name may have been something else) and __________ Seymour (a older son or daughter b. abt 1876). I realize that this is not much information. However, just this last year I was given the probable first name of the wife (Fiona). I know that this is a shot in the dark. However, if anyone on the list with Seymour ancestors had a Fiona ______ marry into their Seymour family in about the late 1870s or early 1880s, I would really love to hear from you. Like I said, I know this seems like a stretch. However, maybe someone will recognize some of the scant facts above to make a connection. I wanted to cross reference the Irish/Northern Irish marriage records to find a Seymour on the Groom side and a Fiona on the bride side. However, I have not been able to find the marriage records on a database that will do this. The actual marriage registers only list the name of the marriage participant under the surname. If these marriage records are ever put in a cross referencing index, I might be in luck. Until then, I have to press on with the little bit of information that I have gathered. I would appreciate any help or guidance anyone is willing to offer on this research problem. Thank you. Nicholas
Rolls of Honour—on my web site at the link below. Alternatively type Jean McCarthy into the Google search engine for a direct link. I have created five new pages containing Rolls of Honour for both world wars. They contain hundreds of names of those who served in both world wars. Unfortunately one section of the page from St Anne’s Roll of Honour is not very legible and it cannot be improved. However the rest of the Rolls of Honour are very clear. I hope to add more Rolls of Honour in the future. On the page for St. John’s C of I Laganbank, I have put a link to the CWGC site where it is possible to identify those killed in action. I hope that my fellow listers find this new addition of interest. Kindest Regards. Jean McCarthy nee Moore. Staffordshire, England. The Linen Mill on the Crumlin Road ( near Ardoyne) was called "Ewart's.) I am not sure if it is still in existence, but if you need to know, I could find out. There are two Presbyterian Churches that I know of -- Ballysillan Presby. and Woodvale Presby. Ardoyne Roman Catholic Church is almost directly opposite Ewart's. Marion.
Maureen, I can tell you that the Wards for the Crumlin Road are: CLIFTON, COURT and SHANKILL. For Sydney Street the Ward is COURT. There is also Sydney Street West which comes under the SHANKILL Ward. Sorry I can't give you answers to the rest of your questions however, if I come across what you're looking for then I'll be in touch. Good luck. It has taken me quite a while to locate my Creagen family in Belfast. The reason being; I was looking for the wrong spelling. It was Cregan. After locating birth certificates etc. I have found that they changed the spelling of their name to Creagen when they came to Canada abt. 1913. They could all read and write so I was wondering why would they change their name? I have found my grandfather in the 1911 census living on Sidney St. as well as my uncles living on Crumlin Rd. This would be Shankhill Ward? They were listed as Presbyterian (although baptised in Lisburn Cathedral) and all worked in the linen factory. Could someone tell me where the nearest Presbyterian Church would be for that area. Also what linen factory would they work in? Kindest Regards, Maureen
I am hoping that someone on this list can be assistance as I seem to have hit a brick wall. I am seeking ancestral information on Margaret Hamilton, born around 1822 in Antrim NI, parents were John Hamilton and Eliza Martin. Margaret Hamilton married Hugh Shannon, my g.g.grandfather, in Glasgow on 12 October 1838. All avenues open to me so far have closed up so I am now appealing to this list for assistance. Andrew
