Hello, Don, I refer to your email below and ask you for the favour to send me a sample card about one - let us say - HOPFGARTEN or BECHSTEDT or ABICHT. Nice to hear from you! In advance already I thank you very much, indeed. Mit freundlichem Gruß. Fritz Hopfgarten Thoelstedter Weg 18, D-28816 STUHR Tel. 0049 [0]421 562311, Fax 5669826 mailto: FritzHopfgarten@gmx.de From: "Don Watson" <dwat@cox.net> To: <NIEDERSACHSEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 11, 2003 7:50 PM Subject: [<nieder>] Ancestral Index of the German People The "Ahnenstammkartei des deutschen Volkes" started in 1922 and ceased to accept new contributions in 1993; it is maintained by the Deutsche Zentralstelle für Genealogie in Leipzig. It is a collection of genealogies of persons and families of Central Europe, mostly German. : In 1991-1992 the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City, microfilmed the whole collection and the films are available through LDS/FHC centers except in Germany. This filming contains approximately 2,700,000 personal names on 1219 microfilm rolls. : A second, much smaller filming, made after the collection closed, covered the accessions subsequent to the first filming. This filming contains perhaps 200,000 personal names on 19 microfilm rolls, and is unindexed and unordered. : You can order an indexed book at http://www.rootsweb.com/~mnggs/die_ahnenstammkartei_des_deutsch.htm (this option is not free), : OR : you can take THIS E-Mail to your area Family History Center. The site which shows you, for example, the surname Schultz, the town where it is found, and the roll of film it is found on, is http://www.genealogienetz.de/lds/AST-ind.html . Scroll down to Item #5. You can look up the surname, town, and film number at home, or use the computer at your area FHC. (These options are free). : We all know that we search from the known to the unknown, BUT perhaps this jump to the Ahnenstammkartei may be helpful to some. If you would like to see a sample of what a card in the card index looks like, contact me, dwat@cox.net. I can't send a sample to an entire mailing list since the sample must be sent as an attachment. : At http://members.cox.net/hessen/links.htm, Table #2, you'll find lots of similar research aides. : :-) Don http://go.to/hessen The German research site listed in Germany by Germans!
