Then, while holding down the "Alt" key -- (that's important -- while holding it down) -- type the numerical codes I will give you below, being sure that you type them using the number pad to the right of your keyboard: Ä = Alt + 0196 Ö = Alt + 0214 Ü = Alt + 0220 ä = Alt + 0228 ö = Alt + 0246 ü = Alt + 0252 ß = Alt + 0223 (this character is used in many, but not all, German words to represent "ss" and is only a lower case character) After typing the numerical code for whatever character you want to type, release the "Alt" key and the character will be there. As to your question as to how to properly list places on a chart, that would vary, depending upon just when the person in question lived. If you give me that information, I can tell you how to properly list the places. Robert
