Surnames: Schuller, Thomas Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZVC.2ACE/764.836.1044 Message Board Post: I too have Schuller ancestors from Alsace-Lorraine. I wonder if they are related. Here is what I know: Michael Schuller's grave marker says he was born in 1845. According to the 1910 U. S. census, he was born in Germany and spoke German. Actually, I believe he may have been born in Alsace. After the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871 Alsace was ceded to Germany and became the Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen or Alsace-Lorraine. It remained under German control until the end of World War I (1914-1918) after which it returned to France. Therefore, from 1871 to 1918 anyone from Alsace-Lorraine would have been considered German. Unfortunately, I don't know which town Michael Schuller was born in. As a result, I cannot find birth, death and marriage records for the family in Alsace. He married Salome (Thomas?) in 1875. (The surname Thomas comes from the World Family Tree, although it sounds English, not French or German.) She was born 1855 in Germany or Alsace and spoke German. In 1886, (1888 according to the 1910 census) they emigrated from the Alsace-Lorraine region of France to the United States. They became naturalized citizens in 1895. Michael was a carriage maker and blacksmith. In 1910 he worked for a boiler company in St. Louis, Missouri. Michael and Salome had 11 children. Five died in infancy or childhood. Only six survived to adulthood according to the 1910 census record. Their children were: Elizabeth Schuller, birth date unknown. She was one of the children who didn't survive to adulthood. We don't have a record of the names of the other children who died in childhood. Alphonse Joseph (Al / Alfie) Schuller, b. 05 Mar 1877, Paris (?), France; d. 04 Nov 1965, St. Louis, Missouri. Joseph A. (Joe) Schuller, b. 17 Mar 1881, Alsace-Lorraine; d. Aug 1964. Anton (Tony) Schuller, b. 1884, Alsace-Lorraine or Germany; d. 1941, St. Louis, Missouri. In the 1920 census, Anton was an inmate at the asylum at 5400 Arsenal Street, St. Louis, Missouri. Michael (Mike) Schuller, b. 26 Nov 1886, Alsace-Lorraine or Germany; d. Mar 1979, Farmington, Saint Francois, Missouri. In 1920, he was a hat maker in a hat factory. Social Security #: 489-01-0338 Minnie Schuller, b. 1889, Missouri. In 1910 she was a stitcher in a shoe factory, living at 815 Geyer Avenue, in St. Louis, Missouri. Marie Salome Schuller, b. 01 Jun 1891, St. Louis, Missouri; d. 28 Apr 1982, Littleton, Colorado. In the 1920 and 1930 census records Michael and Salome lived at 908 Russell Ave., St. Louis, Missouri. Michael Schuller died in 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri and Salome died two years later in 1938. Michael, Salome and their son Anton are buried in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.
