I went to see a beautiful singer in Tokyo who is Navajo and German-descent, Sharon Burch. My great-uncle, from the Neumark area set out to homestead in western Nebraska in the 1880's and wrote about meeting some Native Americans or "Indians" there. They were free and curious having come to the camp around midnight. In the morning, the future homesteaders found they were without horses and their cow. Later, they walked and found a Caucasian man with a native wife who had kindly corralled the horses and cow and returned them so all worked out . He was not much more than 20 and I am sure he was not prepared for that before coming. He did not write about other encounters but no doubt had some. Good question. I hope some more details come.
