Probably the best book written on the subject of immigrant/native relations and the immigrant experience as pioneer farmers in the Nebraska area c 1880 was written by Ole Rolvaag and is titled "Giants in the Earth." It's about Norwegians but the experiences are the same as for Germans. It doesn't gloss over anything but does present a surprisingly balanced (for the time) account. Reading it will increase your respect for both groups and might even change you a little.
