    1. the Hempels of Hanover
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hempel, Klapperodt Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZVC.2ACE/4062 Message Board Post: I am seeking information about a Hempel family that lived possibly in Hanover in the later middle third of the nineteenth century. Charles Hempel was born in 1822 or 23, and his wife Augusta Klapperodt was born about 1827. They emigrated with their sons (Charles, Ernest, and John) to America (Norfolk County Mass) in 1865. In the 1870 American census Charles Hempel Sr (filed under the name Hempler and indexed as Kempler) is listed as being "born in Prussia" and his wife Augusta Klapperodt (as well as the boys) born in Hanover. *However* Augusta's gravestone in Plainville Mass indicates she was born in Prussia as well (Herzberg, which is a town outside of Berlin). To complicate matters further, Charles Hempel Jr's entry in the 1880 American census indicates he was born in "Osterow" Germany. There is no such place as Osterow Germany, but there is a Wustrau Germany a few miles from Herzberg. It seems possible that the Hempels may have moved to Hanover after the birth of Charles (William) Hempel (Jr) before leaving for America in the mid 1860s from Hamburg(?). I am seeking any information that might be available about this family's origins and background in Germany.
