    3. Bob, Wolfenbüttel has an archive that has confirmed that my Hartwig is mentioned in some of their records. They have quite a bit of material, of which nearly nothing has been filmed by the LDS Family History Library. Right now my options are to pay an expensive researcher, or go there myself. My husband is an academic in German and is hoping to go to a conference in Wolfenbüttel next year, so the second option might actually be a realistic one. If one of us somehow gets there, we’d be glad to keep an eye out for your people. I find the Hanstedt book listed in World Cat, the interlibrary loan catalog, but you’re right, there is only one copy, and it’s in Europe. I actually had a German library lend me a Familienbuch once, but that was back when I was getting access through the University of Illinois library (third largest university library in the US). I doubt whether I’d be able to get something like that now. Is there an index? If so, is there any way you can check if a couple of names show up? If my guy is in it, I would be interested in contacting the author. (If not, of course, then I will just keep looking.) My emigrant was Hermann Brunyer or Bruniges, b. 12 Apr. 1797 or 1799 in Hannover (some sources say the city, some just the kingdom). His father was (Johann) Martin Brunyer or Bruniges (possibly Brunjes?) and his mother, Mary Sophia Otten, both born around 1770 and presumably from the Hannover area. Hermann married in England in 1829, so it’s really only a small period of time that he would even show up in German records. I agree on the Dorfchroniken, too—wonderful resources! I have a series from an area down in Hessen, and have really enjoyed getting to know my ancestors from the stories that are in them, so much more than just names and dates. The amazing thing is that these people lived some 300 years ago, and there are still stories about them! German records are great. Rose
