Greetings everyone, I have recently joined the list and am enjoying and learning from your postings. I am hoping to research the German part of our family history... ancester: Gerhardt Heinrich NIETER, b. 1797, Hannover area, d. 1842 in New Bremen, Ohio (USA) married: Katharine Marie (Monie) GUSKY, b. 1804, Hannover area, d. 1852 in New Bremen, Ohio (the settlement was initially called Bremen, then changed to Ober Bremen and later became New Bremen) Ferdinand Heinrich Ludwig NIETER (first child?) was born in 1832, in Hannover and a later child - Johann Henrich Wilhelm NIETER was born in 1838 in Ohio. (these birth dates are not certain as far as I can tell) Many Germans from the Hannover area came to settle in Ohio and had made their way initially to Cincinnati. Some waited there for a period of time until most of the Native American inhabitants had moved further west (around 1832) before travelling north to settle the new communities that were being built in north west Ohio. Shortly after they settled and built homes, many of the young men went to work digging and building the canal which connected Lake Erie to the Ohio River (Toledo to Cincinnati) and some also stayed and settled in the Fort Wayne, Indiana area. Looking forward to hearing from someone with NIETER ancestry, Judith Nieter
