Hello All, Just a quick note to let everyone know that I am the new administrator of this mailing list. Taking over a mailing list is a lot like walking into a theater during the middle of a movie and not having any idea of the plot. So I would like to kick things off by asking you to post something about your interests, genealogy, and brickwalls concerning Niedersachen. Helpful Hint: Remember to change the Subject Line when you reply to this message with your own surnames. :-) The Rules Short List: #1. BE NICE. No flaming of others or nasty criticisms of posts. #2. KEEP ON TOPIC. By that I mean genealogy. No virus reports, or commercial advertising, etc. Rootsweb has lists for many topics to serve all needs. #3. HAVE FUN! If you have any questions or comments that do not belong on-list please contact me at: jasche45133@aol.com. Sincerely, Joan Asche Mailing List Guidelines http://www.jasche.com/lists.html
Dear Joan: Thank you very much for accepting this task. My father's name was CHRISTIAN JOSEPH FIRMENICH, dob: July 1881; place of b: Niederzier, Rhine Province, Prussia. I realize that geographically, Niedersachsen is some distance SW of the Rhineland area, but I have learned some from postings to this list, and hope to continue to do so. Thank you, Joseph D Formick (Firmenich)
Grüße Listmembers: I'd like to introduce myself...I'm a displaced Chicagoan, 37 years in Oregon, USA ,and searching for my families history. I have some fairly substantial evidence that the family of my great grandfather Johann Haase and great grandmother Juliania Ann Behnke came from (or at least resided in the area of) Thorn (now Torun) to Bromberg ( now Bydgoszcz) in West Prussia (now Poland). At least I'm fairly sure they lived there between 1860 and 1888, the range of birth years for my grandfather's youngest and oldest siblings. The known brothers and sisters in my grandfathers family are 1) Ida nee Haase , Born 1860, married Karl (Charlie) Retzke in the USA. 14 children. Died in Benton Harbor, Michigan. 2) Ann Martha nee Haase (known as "Martha") birthdate unknown, Husbands name unknown. Married and had 5 children. Entire family believed to have remained in Germany. 3) Maximillian Haase, Birthdate Unknown. We have a photo of Max at about 17-18 years of age with a Holtzminden/Bad Driberg photographers address. There is some speculation the family may have come from this area and moved ot Thorn/Bromberg. Max is believed to have remained in Germany 4) John (Johann?) Julius Haase, my grandfather. Born in May 1880, Emigrated to the USA in 1903. Married in Chicago IL in 1906. Died in 1963. Evangelical & Reformed-Lutheran. A member of the Masonic Knights Templar. Worked his entire life as a Taylor, Garment Cutter and Master Taylor. 5) Anna nee Haase. Born about 1885/1886. Married "Hintz." (no known first name) One known child Luzi (Lucy?) who was born about 1910/1911 and was confirmed in Spandau Germany in April 1925. KNOWN DATA: Have a copy of the passenger list showing Grandfather John Haase arriving in 1903 on the "Deutschland." Also have his marriage license to Clara Grochowske. Possess copies of the 1910, 1920 and 1930 Chicago census in which he and his family appear. Have checked LDS-FHC records for Thorn, Bromberg, Schulitz, Graudenz, and Gross-NeuDorf without turning up a clue. Have also checked the IGI for those towns plus Danzig and Elbing...no luck. Currently, some relatives are supposedly checking the Cook County records for Intent and Naturalization papers. Have been stuck at the above level of information for the last two years. Thank you all for your time and consideration Warren Haase janwgh@localnet.com
Thanks for taking over, Joan, and good luck! My Niedersachsen interest (obsession?) is with the origin of Georg Andreas HARTWIG. He was a lieutenant in Wolfenbüttel in 1701; in 1703 he joined up with the "foreign" army of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, and in 1715 retired to southern Hesse. Somewhere along the way he aquired a wife, Dorothea Sophia Schumacher, and they produced some eight children. Only the last two were born after retirement. He was born around 1666, according to his death record (he died in 1734 in Birkenau, Kreis Heppenheim, Hessen). Also, I'm interested in a Hermann Brunyer/Bruniges who was born around 1797, somewhere in the area of Hannover (reports differ on whether the city or the kingdom is meant). Emigrated to England in earliy 1800s to work in the sugar industry, married a Yorkshire girl, and eventually came to the U.S. His mother was an Otten. There is a region not far off from Bremen with tons of Bruniges/Ottens, but so far he hasn't turned up. Rose Green in South Carolina
Hello fellow listers, In response to Joan's note, the genealogy bug bit me about six years ago. Unfortunately, the one person who could have answered a lot of my questions - my grandmother - died in 1989. In going through a box of old photographs that she kept, I found a yellowed newspaper article that had been written about the ALGERMISSEN family of St. Charles, Missouri. She had married an ALGERMISSEN in 1919. My father was born in 1920. She and my biological grandfather divorced soon after. She remarried in 1929 to George DOWNEY who adopted my father, thus my surname. That newspaper article was a treasure because it provided me with names and most importantly the location where my ancestors lived - Harsum, Hildesheim, Hannover. That, plus the help of some kind folks at a Family History Center in the Phoenix, Arizona area, launched me on my family tree adventure. Over time, I learned to recognize letters and words and translate the Latin written in German script. Undoubtedly, the ALGERMISSENs originated in the nearby town of Algermissen, but that connection seems to predate the records for the town's Catholic parish, so I don't know when this branch moved to Harsum. Other ancestor lines include the GROVEs and the ECKHARDTs whom I've traced as far as the Harsum records will allow. The one line I still need to work on involves my gggg-grandfather, Ferdinand ECKHARDT and his wife Anna Maria FLOGEL. They were apparently from Hildesheim because they don't show up in the Harsum records until their marriage on 4 JUN 1770. The record says they were married in Hildesheim by the Bishop. In the Harsum record, his name is preceded by an uppercase D. Does that mean he was a doctor of some kind? I haven't ordered any Hildesheim microfilms, but I would presume the marriage took place at the cathedral. Am I correct in suspecting that? Roger Downey Glendale, Arizona

Hi Jerry Sorry but no luck. Good Luck in the future - it might take you quite awhile. I am still looking for my grandfather and I've been doing that for about 20 years. Some day I'll find him. After all if it were easy we wouldn't be enjoying ourselves. Marge, I appreciate your kind offer. Do you have STULKEN? I am specifically interested in Johann Friederich Stulken, who arrived in the US about 1870. I would also like to know of any other Stulkens you find in your books. Thanks, Marilyn ralphkroehler wrote: > Have you researched in the volumes "German Immigrants" by Zimmerman and > Wolfert? The records for areas north of Bremen have been updated and contain accurate records from church records for:- Lesum, Schwanewede, Platjenwerbe, Scharmbeck in addition to many surrounding small towns and villages. While it is work in progress there are now in excess of 100 thousand individual records in the MAUS website. In the site there are several sites leading to extensive amount of researched data from actual church and land registry records, not from the web, they are open to those who believe that they may have origins will find the site useful. In addition there are also leads to local Genealogists who are active in the area and are members of MAUS. Kind regards Laurie
