    1. I need some breathing room!! -- E-Mail from Don--
    2. Don Watson
    3. Folks, if I am EVER going to catch up on my language translations, I've got to stop worrying about my mailing lists and tightcircle! I love being helpful, but there are persons out there who would like to know what their German ancestors old letter or birth, baptism, marriage certificate says, in English. I've even been translating pamphlets, Bible entries, post cards, songs, poetry - and unless I move all this to the front of the pack, I'll never catch up. We've got some really helpful folks now; that really will go a long way in helping me establish some priorities. If you REALLY need MY personal assistance, please contact me at dwats@cox.net rather than via the mailing list. NOW .. it's back to translations! :-) Don http://members.cox.net/hessen/donstrans.htm

    2. Don Watson
    3. A Testimonial to Don Thank You Don Watson !!! March 21, 2005 I would like to offer this testimonial along with my sincere thanks to Don Watson for his very timely help and encouragement in locating archival records for my German ancestors. When I first contacted Don thru his Hessen website, I had determined the birthplace location and date of birth for my grandfather, Ludwig Reinhard, from his death certificate. Don graciously helped me with answers to many questions about archival record search, and helped me with letters of inquiry, in German, to the Kassel Evangelische Kirche von Kurhessen-Waldeck Landeskirchliches Archiv and to the Niedenstein Stadtverwaltung (Kassel Evangelical Church Archives for Kurhessen-Waldeck, and City of Niedenstein Municipal Administration). Don also made a telephone call to the Niedenstein Stadtverwaltung on my behalf, and even offered to travel to the Niedenstein/Wichdorf/Fritzlar areas to research my family during his trip to Germany in 2004. Because I neither read nor spoke German, this kind help and encouragement from Don certainly buoyed up my spirits and hopes for some progress in my longstanding quest for ancestor information. Fortunately, just before Don's Germany trip, I received email notification from the Kassel Evangelische Kirche that they had located 52 pages of archive records for my ancestors that spanned four generations and included many towns just south of Kassel! Don translated this response and helped me obtain the archival records. In the Niedenstein/Wichdorf area, with help from a local hotel owner, I located a living relative (a second cousin). He gave me many precious family documents and photos, and showed me the house where my grandfather was raised, and also my great-grandparent's gravesite locations in the local cemetery! I am so grateful to Don for helping to get this all started. Without his help and encouragement at critical times, it wouldn't have happened. After having seen this beautiful area and meeting the nice people there, I am very proud to say that I have German ancestors from Hessen. "Awe" is exactly the right word. Awesome! To stand in my ancestors footsteps was truly "closure" for me. I loved all that I saw about Hessen. This experience has also encouraged me to start learning the German language. Again, my deepest gratitude to you, Don, Dr. Kenneth L. Reinhard Coolin, Idaho Email: KnRnhrd@aol.com

    3. Gross Drehle is in Niedersachsen, about 20 miles north of Osnabrueck. You can see it using the Town Locator at... http://members.cox.net/hessen/towns.htm It is under the administrative control of 49596 Gehrde. That's where it gets its mail. We'll need his faith, what you already know, and what you need to know. The Stagge family still lives there, in the town of 49599 Voltage, just a stone's throw from Gross Drehle. :-) Don

    3. We tried one of the places mentioned here (sorry, can't remember which 1-800 number it was). There was a payment deadline so we opted for the wire transfer instead of the check. It was not all that cheap and it took a very long time (we had to call them three or four times because they never got around to running the transfer). In the end, we found out our bank would write a check in Euros for us for something like a $6 fee. Next time we'll go with the bank. Rose Green researching HARTWIG

Never a problem with it, and our contacts in Germany really appreciate us for using it. :-) Don ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephanie" <stephie@seasurf.net> Someone on this list suggested International Currency Express their fee was $10. and it was very easy, I order the money order on an 800 phone #, gave them my credit card and they mail the MO to me and I mail it. 3. Hello Everyone, Thank you to all who wrote with suggestions to send funds to Germany in payment for genealogy research at a parish. Everything I tried seemed to hit a "brick wall". Finally decided to just buy some euros and mail them, my bank only sold them in increments of $100. so that didn't work, Ruesch International Bank Drafts didn't work, they no longer deal with individuals only companies. 3. I am not sure how it works, but if you are a member of AAA auto and travel club you can exchange currency with them. Contact your local AAA office as ask. They were suggesting you exchange your money before you travel. I would think you could exchange some money and send the euro's to them. 2. Re: Funds to Germany: I recently ordered genealogical books and had the same problem, to transfer funds to an account for huge fees. In the past I have transferred funds with paypal and it worked very well, but in this most recent transaction I send cash in a double envelope. My €uros came from a bank exchange. If you have no access to that, they will accept Dollars, that too has worked in the past and the exchange fee is much less than the transfer fee. Chance of loss is a possibility though, has not happened yet to me, however. Greetings from snowy Kingston, NY Ingrid Fetkoeter

    3. Hello, I hope someone can help me on this list. I recently received some documents from a church in Germany along with a bill for 37 Euro. They send a bank account number where I am to wire this amount. When I asked at my bank there is a $20. charge plus the church has to pay on their end when they receive the funds. This seems high for such a small amount to send. I also tried a Ruesch International Bank Draft, they no longer deal with individuals only companies. Can someone suggest a reasonable way to do this? Thank you for your help. Stephanie Miller
