    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Waldmann Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZVC.2ACE/3959 Message Board Post: Ann Angels Freedom A historic novel by Katharina Kolata At the end of the 18th century, living on a rich farm like the one of the Waldmann family meant lots of hard work and little time for privacy. Still, Ann Angel Waldmann is happy. However, everything changed when her father decided to buy their freedom. Would it be a change for the better? This novel is based on the true history of the Waldmann family. It covers the time from 1799 to 1803 in the area of Osnabrück, a time of world-wide changes. Beside the everyday worries about friends and families, people of the rural community have to cope with the results of the first and second war against Napoleon. Even if they aren't involved yet, war casts its shadow over the peaceful village. A sample chapter of the novel "Ann Angels Freedom" by Katharina Kolata can be downloaded from the web site of the Waldmann family: http://www.die-waldmanns.de. Who ever would like a copy of this novel can order it by sending me an email.

    3. Susan.... Did I give the dates of 1830-1860 for t he 30 Years War? If so I go to the back of the class for being careless. The dates were 1618-48. But I believe some other reader caught that.. Elfreide is what we call an ""old maid" and she works hard at local history, following in her fathers footsteps. There is a Bachman museum in Bremervoerde which is the result of her father's and her efforts. But her house and an large building on her property is even more of a treasure house. I worry what may happen when she must give that up. But she is the authority on local history. I can't give you the history of Nothern German and their relations to Sweden (Denmark and France) before they finally became independent as part of the Kingdom of Hannover. And I am not aware of any books in English that deal with this in detail. Whithout checking with my records here is a summary: 1618 the war begins and the area is invaded and occupied by Catholic troops of the Empire trying to restore the status quo. Denmark invades with the intent of annexing but were reather brutal and not well liked. 1628, I believe, Sweden, and Lutheran Protestant force comes in as liberators. The Empire forces return and are again driven out by the Swedes. During all this Swedish occupation Germans joined them for a couple of reasons; to live better, to keep Catholic forces out and a certain Lutheran idealism And Frnace intervenes for a brief period in a rather brutal fashion. I just do not have time to look up dates and verify things at this point but this may get you started. AS regards the records, the Swedish records, along with the German, are in the Archives in STada. This is where my researcher (Mueller-Koppe) got my information and there may well be more in Sweden. But I dare say Jens could do you a good service. A good idea is to access the library website of your nearest university and check the information there... or call or email your friendly Reference Librarian (smile) you may be very pleasantly surprised by how helpful they are! (also some larger libraries may be "depository libraries"... with more international documents and publications than you dreamed :)

    3. Hi Linda. I wish I could connect with one of those names you listed. Paul MEYER came from the old country to St. Louis, as far as I know. I don't know for fact, but I think he came here to follow his friend/relative Ernst PIEPENSCHNEIDER. Since Paul moved in with Ernst, I'm guessing they knew each other as friends/relatives from Germany. It's my only hope on Paul I've reached a dead end with him. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of expenses so far this year, and just don't have the money to pay for research. Other than the mystery John, and a possible Charles, I don't know of any other relatives of Paul's. I would think I have cousins, somewhere ! 3. Bob, Wolfenbüttel has an archive that has confirmed that my Hartwig is mentioned in some of their records. They have quite a bit of material, of which nearly nothing has been filmed by the LDS Family History Library. Right now my options are to pay an expensive researcher, or go there myself. My husband is an academic in German and is hoping to go to a conference in Wolfenbüttel next year, so the second option might actually be a realistic one. If one of us somehow gets there, we’d be glad to keep an eye out for your people. I find the Hanstedt book listed in World Cat, the interlibrary loan catalog, but you’re right, there is only one copy, and it’s in Europe. I actually had a German library lend me a Familienbuch once, but that was back when I was getting access through the University of Illinois library (third largest university library in the US). I doubt whether I’d be able to get something like that now. Is there an index? If so, is there any way you can check if a couple of names show up? If my guy is in it, I would be interested in contacting the author. (If not, of course, then I will just keep looking.) My emigrant was Hermann Brunyer or Bruniges, b. 12 Apr. 1797 or 1799 in Hannover (some sources say the city, some just the kingdom). His father was (Johann) Martin Brunyer or Bruniges (possibly Brunjes?) and his mother, Mary Sophia Otten, both born around 1770 and presumably from the Hannover area. Hermann married in England in 1829, so it’s really only a small period of time that he would even show up in German records. I agree on the Dorfchroniken, too—wonderful resources! I have a series from an area down in Hessen, and have really enjoyed getting to know my ancestors from the stories that are in them, so much more than just names and dates. The amazing thing is that these people lived some 300 years ago, and there are still stories about them! German records are great. Rose
