Grünenplan was located in the District (in German: Kreis) of Holzminden in what was until 1945 the very small state (until 1918, Duchy) of Brunswick (in German: Braunschweig), the capital of which was the city of Brunswick (Braunschweig), where the Duke resided. Following World War II and the break-up of the huge state of Prussia, the Prussian province of Hanover, the state of Oldenburg, and the two very small states of Brunswick (Braunschweig) and Schaumburg-Lippe combinded to form today's German state of Lower Saxony (in German: Niedersachsen), with the city of Hanover (in German: Hannover) as its capital. Grünenplan is no longer an independent town. Since 1974, it has been part of the town of Delligsen. Delligsen has a total population of about 9000 people, of whom about 3000 live in Grünenplan. Grünenplan wasn't actually a village (Dorf). It was a town (Gemeinde). Here is the link to a map of pre-1945 Brunswick (Braunschweig), so that you know what it looked like. It was made up of a number of enclaves covering together an area just a little smaller than that covered by the U.S. state of Rhode Island. To the southwest, you will see the enclave that included the city of Holzminden. Grünenplan is right near Holzminden. http://www.gonschior.de/weimar/Braunschweig/uebersichtskarte.html And here is the link to a map of Germany and its states today. In the north, you will see today's state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), of which Brunswick (Braunschweig), located in the southern part, is one of the four components: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wggerman/state.htm Robert

Thank you for your suggestion. Frau Stueve replied within a few hours. She had researched the whole period 1875-1914, unfortunately without result. She did not have a death certificate for my great grandmother, although she did have one for my greatgrandfather who died in Bederkesa in 1904. Frau Stueve must be one of the few Still working in mid-August. Thanks again.
Hello all, Ankum and Bersenbruck were wonderful when I visted my Gärke family in that area, and Doethen. I find it interesting how Ankum takes pride in it's streets and ornate town design. It reminds me of how Minster (Ohio) and New Bremen (Ohio) try to outdo each other in keeping their towns up. The Gärke family orignally is decended from the Stottmann line until they bought the Gärke farm and changed their name to match the farm back in old times. Bergman, Holdheide and other names I noted were the same in that area as it was in mine. The Standesamt in Bad Bederkesa is headed by a woman by the name of Wera Stüve. I will give you her e-mail address. Be sure to make the subject line of your e-mail "Sterbeurkunde", German for "death record", so that Frau Stüve immediately knows what it's about, but if you want, you can type the body of the e-mail in English. w.stueve@sg-bederkesa.de (Remember, this is August, when people are away, in case you don't hear back from her right away.) He came from Bornberg near Hechthausen. I think she may have come from the area north of Bad Bederkesa between Otterndorf and Steinau. All I know is that she drowned near Steinau on her way to a wedding in 1898. They had spent their married life in Bederkesa. I have been through the Hechthausen and Bederkesa churchbooks microfilmed by the Family History center but have not found Metta's birth or their marriage in the records.
