    1. Schönemann from Hannover
    2. I have just begun my search for my German roots. My great grandfather Friederich Schönemann was born in Hannover on 09 November 1851. By 1879 he was in Oslo, Norway where he married Anna Kristine Fredrikke Reese. Their descendants ended up in New York where I was born. All of the information I have on him so far is from Norwegian census and church records. Could anyone give me suggestions on how to start researching him in Germany? Roy

I think they were married in a Lutheran church in Westrhauderfehn. They also had children while still in Germany. John was one of them and he was my grandfather. I believe they lived in the village of Burlage. Or possibly Leer.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZVC.2ACE/3993 Message Board Post: I have traced some ancestors (I think!!!) back to Schandorf in the Hannover Region, which they left in 1852 to travel to the U.S. I understand that village has since been incorporated into Menslage, which is about 6 miles west of Quakenbrück. Can anyone verify that for me? The names are John or Johann Borgarding or Borcherding, and Anna Haverkamp of Hafferkamp or Haverkampell (I have seen all these variations in my research).

    1. Boehmes in Salzgitter
    2. Bill Armstrong
    3. I am searching for the Boehme family in Salzgitter, Niedersachsen. I haven t been able to find much information about this area. The population of the city is 115,500. Where do I look to find information about this area? Where would the records be stored? My great-Grandfather, Ernst Boehme came to the US between 1865 and 1875. He was born May 17, 1847. Family story is that his Mother died the day he was born (I don't know if this is true since there are several different stories). Thanks for your help. Linda

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZVC.2ACE/3990.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Robert, it actually should have occurred to me that your great-grandmother's death record would probably be on file where she actually died, not where she resided at the time. According to your information, she drowned near Steinau. The towns and villages in Lower Saxony are grouped together in associations known as "Samtgemeinden". Steinau is among the towns and villages that belong to the "Samtgemeinde Sietland". The Standesamt responsible for all of the towns and villages in the Samtgemeinde Sietland is located in the town of Ihlienworth. So I would suggest that you contact the Standesamt there, explaining to them that your great-grandmother drowned near there back in 1898 and you thus feel that her death record would be on file with them. Here is their e-mail address. The woman you will be in contact with there is a Frau Lengsfeld: standesamt@ihlienworth.de Let me know what you find out! Robert
