WE might be able to help you. On our website, which we created as a help to the mailing list we have two individuals with the surname Isensee. Isensee, Heinrich, B-?, Mabel E. Alley, JSHA 1997. S#400 and Isensee, John Andreas, B-?, D*Augl780asPOW, Mass. S#8v3/2p79 You can find them at: http://freepages.military.rootsweb.com/~bonsteinandgilpin/a/amhessians11.htm (the codes are explained on the pages) I would sugest joining our mailing list or at least visiting the website and learning what you can about these two gentelmen. You are correct in that all German soldiers who came from the seven different Germanic principalities who fought on the English side of the American Revolution were called Hessians although only two of the principalties had Hessa in their names. I hope this helps you Nelda

This is a new spelling of the name I have seen Esensa Essensa Isensee Isense. I guess however they spell it it seems the same Heinrich from Appelton Maine I received the story via three sources + Broad Bay Pioneers , History of the Town of Union Maine and Early Families of The Mackadavy where his grandson my great grandfather settled south western New Brunswick a place called Lee Settlement where I was born I now am retired and live in Northern Alberta Canada My great grandfather was Charles son of David (Heinrichs son) who settled in Harvey Station area of NB It was indicated to me I is pronounced like E in German. Maybe this explains why they spelled it with and E. I read he had someone write for him to Germany to his family who thought he was dead so it sounds like he probably did not write which was common in those times.I could find no record of any variation ! of Essensa on German sites only Isensee wjich is a place near North sea meaning sea of Ice.Also there were references to Hessian soldier all German soldiers were called Hessians by early Americans he came from Brunswick not Hesse from what I read. Which branch are you from the NB OR Maine? This is not very helpful I realize but no one responds to my postings on German sites if they do I will post something for you regards Dale Essensa

Dear Claire, I have Hoormann relatives from Wehm, which couldn't have had more than a couple hundred residents in 1840. My grandmother was Maria Hoormann. Her father was Johann Hermann Hoormann and her mother is listed on her brother's emigration document as Angela Martlage. Maria came to St. Louis with her brother Bernard Heinrich Hoormann. I am very sketchy about these relatives. There is another Hoormann family from Vinnen (four miles from Wehn) that moved to Florissant, Missouri (where I lived for several years.) So I am interested in further info about Johan Herman Deters from Wehm. My Kramer ancestors lived in Andervenne along with my Rectin(g) relatives. Any connections? Thanks, Joseph Kramer

I am new to this list and hope someone will suggest how I might proceed to locate birth or baptismal records for my great- grandfather, Johann Ludwig Luschen/Lueschen b 16 Sept 1860. Family information is that Ludwig was from “near the city of Oldenburg,” but a very helpful person, Mr. Lueschen, (no relation) informed me that my Ludwig was the son of Johann Hinrich (b. 1 Mar 1810, Hengstlager Weg) and Catherine Marie (Asche) Luschen, oo 9 Oct 1840 in Wardenburg. Assuming that Ludwig Luschen/Lueschen was baptized in the church where his parents married, Ludwig was baptized in Wardenburg. What is best, writing or emailing the church in Wardenburg, or writing to the church archive in Wildeshausen to locate the baptismal records for Ludwig? Or, should I try to locate the birth record of Ludwig? Thanks in advance. MJ Albrecht, Nebraska

She responded immediately with instructions about what she needed to send me the Sterbeurkunde. I had to send her proof that Metta Offermann was my greatgrandmother, a formal written request for the document and a deposit of 7 Euros into the Ihlienworth bank Konto. I ordered a bank draft over the Internet from International Currency Express. They mailed it to me and I mailed it to the bank in Germany. It cost me $9.21 for the money and a $10 service charge. They did accept my credit card for the order. I have just received the death certificate and it does indeed give my greatgrandmothers place of birth and maiden name so all ended well. Thanks for your help

Gusti is the daughter of Maria Elizabeth's brother, name unknown. 2) "Gusti" is the affectionate form of "August" (male), may be very rarely used special in this aerea of Germany, seldom female. I found several references to "Auguste" as a female name, so that might be it. While I don't know the area very well, I have a birth certificate of Marie Elizabeth's daughter, Wilhelmina Botefuhr, which bears a stamp with the word "Altona" in it. That might be where they are from. Thank you for the pointers!
