Surnames: Meyer Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZVC.2ACE/824.113.115.1.1 Message Board Post: I have heard that they came thru Mexico during the time of the California gold rush. The ships were coming "around the Horn". One ship that I have heard of was the Falcon and that was in the begining - there were many others. It was unable to anchor near town (Chagres). some of the crew abandoned ship and some of the passengers paid native boatmen to take them to shore. A rush was on to cross the Isthmus. Many walked or traveled by any means they could hire.(canoes, mules etc.) Getting into Mexico some of the Germans stayed for awhile before moving on. My family research has been with the Maasberg surname. This story has been told to me with no way of verifying it. The rush to get to California this way went on from 1848 to around 1869. Somewhere I have the names of the cities in Mexico. I will look for them and add them when found.

    1. Mistakes that net results
    2. A recent revisitation of US census copies of long ago, especially the ones belonging to those deadbeats, who don't want to tell you where they came from and prefer to be the brick wall. I found a mistake in the 1920 Monroe County, NY, census, where they census taker wrote in the name of the community, then crossed it out, and properly filled in "Germany" in the section of "place of birth". Enhancement of that part of the census provided the possible location. Further research in that community, primarily LDS, resulted in me squeesing out 31 sets of great-grand parents across the ancestor chart, with most ending in the early 1600's and 8 generations. Lesson learned, go back, you may already have the answer, and try to remember, the smallest detail may produce the largest result. Guenter in Michigan

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZVC.2ACE/4048 Message Board Post: Hello, My name is Joseph Puentes. I have a podcast at: http://NuestraFamiliaUnida.com The topic of my podcast is Hispanic/Indigenous History and Genealogy. Podcasting is taking audio files and making them available over the internet. It is the perfect medium to get the word out and we need to have Genealogy podcasts on every different type of ethnic genealogical research. I would invite you to step forward and create a 20-30 minute audio once a month on your specific kind of Genealogy. You can basically spell out the different steps involved and any tricks you've learned along the way about researching your ethnic roots. A once a month commitment is very easy to keep in fact you might find this addicting and decide to put out an episode more frequently. I am not an expert but feel confident in sharing my own experience in getting the http://NuestraFamiliaUnida.com podcast up and running. So if you need help with the technology challenge I'm here to walk you through the steps. Now I'm not offering to do your show, but I am available to get you started. So if you have a burning desire to share with others doing your particular type of ethnic genealogical study the basics in how to get started please consider sharing your knowledge in Audio form via a Podcast. contact me at: Joseph Puentes NFU@JosephPuentes.com

    2. Carol McArthur
    3. Hello ! I'm looking at microfilm Catholic church records from the area once known as Westphalia. In the margin, under the town name, on several birth records, I see the word "Zacharias". I haven't seen the word in connection with the last name, to indicate that this is a first name. Unfortunately, I cannot read the records as they are either in German, Latin, or maybe both. Does anyone have any idea what Zacharias might be? Carol in St. Louis
