I do have quite a bit of information on the Kreiter family. I was born in Shohola, Pa. Franz Kreiter is buried, along with his wife Christina in the cemetary near where I grew up, on German Hill. I would like more information on where the Kreiter farm was in Shohola. Josephine married George Keller, and my grandmother Justine was their daughter. After George was killed, my grandmother married Valentine Hipsmann. This spelling was changed when the family came over from Germany. They also settled in Shohola. Valentine was in the Civil War and lost his arm at Gettysburg. Josephine's brother John was killed in the Civil War in South Carolina. If this ever reaches anyone I would be interested in finding out any information they might have. There are still some decendents living in Pike County. Sincerely, Jean (Eckhart) Gross

The smaller town is Isenstadt. We visited both places and were able to get into the church books at Isenstadt and were able to determine that Heinrich Wilhelm Rahtert (my great grandfather) was born there. His father was August Rahtert, and he was born at Isenstadt farm # 85. That is as far as we could go as the person in charge of the church books at Gehlenbeck would not let view the books. There are still Rahterts in the area, but we could not tie them together with my great grandfather. One of the problems we encountered is that when a man marries a woman who owns a farm he often takes her name. My great grandfather married Anna Sophie Charlotte Brammeier in Isenstadt in 1853. and emmigrated to the US shortly there after. They settled at Wilton, Iowa, and about 1871 moved to Treynor, Iowa where he died on July 9th 1873. He has many decendents there but none bear the Rahtert name as his surviving children were ! all female. If you want to contact me directly, my email is vorthman@mwci.net

Greetings Becky: Thank you very much for your response. I am not a member of ancestry but I do have access to it through the local LDS-FHC. I have her marriage certificate (no church records) for her marriage to Karl Retzke in Chicago in July of 1886, so I know she came here prior to this, In 1886 she would have been 26 years old. Since I have no record of any other family member traveling with her, I would guess she was probably no younger that 16 when she came over. This would make the range of her travel 1876 to 1886. A case could be made for the earlier travel dates of 1865 to 1875 as you have suggested. I have no data regarding her parents Johann and Juliania. estimate their birth dates to be in the 1833 to 1841 range. I have a wealth of evidence (including verbal statemnets from Ida's brother Johann-my grandfather) that their town of origin was Thorn, but have not been able to verify this through any LDS microfilms.m It may have been any town in Kreis Thorn. Anything you can raise through ancestry would be appreciated. Thanks again for your help. Warren, Do you subscribe to ancestry? I did a quick search and have some info / thoughts. According to her 1900 census record, she was born in July 1861 and she did not know the year of her immigration nor did she know how many years she had been in the US. I was unable to find her 1910 census record. Her 1920 census record says that she immigated prior to 1900 and she still did not know how many years she had been in the US. --This leads me to believe she probably came when a young child and by about age 40, could no longer remember when she had come. This might also put her year of immigration much closer to her year of birth ... say 1860-1870. I've never seen this answer before, unless the person immigrated before age 5 and their parents are no longer around to ask, or died when she was still very young. Charles / Karl, her husband, immigrated in 1885 and by the 1900 census they had been married for 14 years. That agrees with your belief that they married in the US. Do you have their church marriage records? These records, as compared to civil records, often show the town they were from. Do you know birth / death years of her parents, Johann and Julianna? Since her siblings were born up to about 1880, it makes sense that she would have immigrated, on her own, when she was 16 years or older. One would think, if she immigrated in the mid 1880s she would have been old enough to remember enough to answer the census question ... a mere 15 years later. Very odd. Let me know and I'll search ancestry's immigration databases. Greetings List: I am searching for some additional data on my grandfathers sister, Her name was Ida Juliania Haase. Some background on her is as follows: She was born on July. 4,1860, d. Oct. 1942, Married Karl Henry Retzke; in the USA. They were married on 7-13-1886. had 13 children, and lived first in Chicago, IL, and later in Michigan. Her siblings were Anne-Martha Haase (known as "Martha") born between 1861 and 1879, Maxmilian Haase, also born between 1861 and 1879, , Johann Julius Haase (my grandfather) born May 11, 1880, and Anna Haase Born circa 1882-1885. Her parents were Johann Haase and Juliania Ann nee Behnke, believed to be from Thorn, West Prussia. The data I am looking for is: (1) The port she embarked from to emigrate to the US, (2) The date of her emigration, and; (3) The ship she came over on. This data will help confirm Ida's town of birth, presumed to be Thorn, West Prussia. When her brother Johann came to this country, he left from Bremen and arrived in Philadelphia, but I do not know if she traveled the same route. I would guess she traveled a year or two before her marriage, which would make it in about 1884/1885. She was not yet married, so she traveled as "Ida Haase." I thank you in advance for any information on Ida or any other data that may turn up on her family in Germany. Warren Haase janwgh@localnet.com
