I was wondering if anyone else had ancestors or families they were researching from the Vechta or the area immediately outside of it that went to the Cincinnati, Ohio, Auglaize, Ohio, Covington/Newport, Kentucky and Oldenburg, Indiana areas. I have noticed in my research, a growing trend for people from this area. Here's some surnames with towns of origin that I have found so far (note: they may be in more small towns that I've identified as of yet, if you have additions, please do let me know): Behne - Steinfeld (Vechta) Beiderhacke - Holdorf (Vechta) Borges - Schwagstorf (Lower Saxony) Brames - Ostercappeln (Lower Saxony) Busse - Goldenstedt, Ellenstedt (both in Vechta) Fahrendorf - Salzbergen (Hanover, near border of NorthRhine-Westphalia) Franxmann - Ohrbeck (Lower Saxony) Fuehner - Lingen (Lower Saxony) Hartke - Schwagstorf (Lower Saxony) Heving - Ochtrup (North-Rhine-Westphalia - most northern part, bordering Oldenburg) Kroeger - Ellenstedt (Vechta) Meirose - Steinfeld, Damme, Holdorf (all in Vechta) Nienkamp/Neenkamp - Steinfeld (Vechta) Prieshoff - Fladderlohausen, Neuenkirchen (all in Vechta) Rabe - Steinfeld (Vechta) Schulte - Steinfeld (Vechta), Epe (Hanover) Stuntebeck - Steinfeld, Damme, Neuenkirchen (all in Vechta) Von Hoene - Bersenbrueck (Lower Saxony) Voss - Neuenkirchen (Vechta) Wieghaus - Neunkirchen (Vechta) Families I know are from Oldenburg but don't know town yet: Brokamp Kemphaus Kruempelbeck Meyer Thies or These Wehenpohl Wessendorf/Westendorf Families from Saxony: Dedden - Werdau Plaggenborg - Werdau Families that listed Hanover on census, but may be from nearby as they attended same church and intermarried: Bestermann Bohnen Borges Brink Bruns/Brungs Diehlmann Franxmann Gerke/Gerken - Pecitohl? Hoemann Meibers Mueller Peter Prieshoff Rowekamp Schriber Sprengelmeyer Thamann Wischer/Wisker Zumdick These are just families I have looked into. Most of them were on the Covington side, but a few of these can be found in Cincinnati. I also was looking through my Heving data (hope to have the family history out by mid May or early June) and noticed on the German Pioneer Society of Covington meeting sheets that many of the people listed were in fact listing Vechta or Oldenburg as their ancestral homelands! When looking through microfilmed church records in Covington I came upon many entries for individuals in Oldenburg, but if they weren't a family I was researching, I didn't take note of them. Online there is the Amt. Damme emigration index, which I have printed out. Many of the names I saw there, though not my own), I recognized from the Mother of God, St. Joseph, St. Augustine, and St. Mary's church records in Covington, Kentucky. It appears many people from the Vechta did follow a man by the name of Franz Stallo, who led his parishioners first to Cincinnati, then ! to Auglaize, Ohio. Apparently some people who originally came to the Cincinnati area with Stallo, did not follow him north to Auglaize, rather they stayed in Cincinnati or went across the river to Covington and Newport, Kentucky OR went west across the state line into Oldenburg, Indiana. I realize not all these people are from the exact same area, but there does appear to be atleast some of them that fit into a pattern. One of the days the list will grown, I still have many people in my PAF who are simply born in Germany. I don't doubt some of them are from the same area. If you have any contributions to this mini-research project of mine, please do let me know.

Surnames: Schuller, Thomas Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZVC.2ACE/764.836.1044 Message Board Post: I too have Schuller ancestors from Alsace-Lorraine. I wonder if they are related. Here is what I know: Michael Schuller's grave marker says he was born in 1845. According to the 1910 U. S. census, he was born in Germany and spoke German. Actually, I believe he may have been born in Alsace. After the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871 Alsace was ceded to Germany and became the Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen or Alsace-Lorraine. It remained under German control until the end of World War I (1914-1918) after which it returned to France. Therefore, from 1871 to 1918 anyone from Alsace-Lorraine would have been considered German. Unfortunately, I don't know which town Michael Schuller was born in. As a result, I cannot find birth, death and marriage records for the family in Alsace. He married Salome (Thomas?) in 1875. (The surname Thomas comes from the World Family Tree, although it sounds English, not French or German.) She was born 1855 in Germany or Alsace and spoke German. In 1886, (1888 according to the 1910 census) they emigrated from the Alsace-Lorraine region of France to the United States. They became naturalized citizens in 1895. Michael was a carriage maker and blacksmith. In 1910 he worked for a boiler company in St. Louis, Missouri. Michael and Salome had 11 children. Five died in infancy or childhood. Only six survived to adulthood according to the 1910 census record. Their children were: Elizabeth Schuller, birth date unknown. She was one of the children who didn't survive to adulthood. We don't have a record of the names of the other children who died in childhood. Alphonse Joseph (Al / Alfie) Schuller, b. 05 Mar 1877, Paris (?), France; d. 04 Nov 1965, St. Louis, Missouri. Joseph A. (Joe) Schuller, b. 17 Mar 1881, Alsace-Lorraine; d. Aug 1964. Anton (Tony) Schuller, b. 1884, Alsace-Lorraine or Germany; d. 1941, St. Louis, Missouri. In the 1920 census, Anton was an inmate at the asylum at 5400 Arsenal Street, St. Louis, Missouri. Michael (Mike) Schuller, b. 26 Nov 1886, Alsace-Lorraine or Germany; d. Mar 1979, Farmington, Saint Francois, Missouri. In 1920, he was a hat maker in a hat factory. Social Security #: 489-01-0338 Minnie Schuller, b. 1889, Missouri. In 1910 she was a stitcher in a shoe factory, living at 815 Geyer Avenue, in St. Louis, Missouri. Marie Salome Schuller, b. 01 Jun 1891, St. Louis, Missouri; d. 28 Apr 1982, Littleton, Colorado. In the 1920 and 1930 census records Michael and Salome lived at 908 Russell Ave., St. Louis, Missouri. Michael Schuller died in 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri and Salome died two years later in 1938. Michael, Salome and their son Anton are buried in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.

This particular message board here is the Germany Niedersachsen (in English: Lower Saxony) board, the board for people looking for information about people who were specifically from what is today the German state of Lower Saxony (in German: Niedersachsen), the capital of which is the city of Hanover, in northwestern Germany. Neither of the cities you mention are anywhere even in the vicinity of this part of Germany. The city of Chemnitz is located in the state of Saxony (in German: Sachsen; capital: Dresden; largest city: Leipzig), and Gera is located in the state of Thuringia (in German: Thüringen; capital: Erfurt). So I would suggest that you post your query again, both on the Saxony and the Thuringia messages boards, so that people familiar with those cities and families from them and who might thus have useful information for you will see it. Your query could sit here on the Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) board forever unanswered, which of course would be of no help to you. Robert

There is a book called Von Heuerleuten und Farmern by Walter D. Kamphoefner, Peter Marschalck, and Birgit Nolte-Schuster written in English and German, side by side (copyrighted in 1999). A woman in Germany gave me my copy but I have seen it at genealogy fairs. The book is divided into sections: Population and Social Structure; Ships & Agents; Chain Migration, Settlement Patterns, Integration; and From Gehrde to New York and back. I highly recommend it. Janet, I have used Sylvia Mohle for a couple of years, and been very pleased. She has an extensive background for archival research. While I'm at it, I might as well post my names. I am looking for info on Maria SOHNS who married Adolph BLASS about 1878 or 1879. Maria said she was from Hannover. Adolph was born in Blomberg, Lippe, but his father (Heinrich August BLASS and Catherine STEINKAMP) were from Gross Berkel in Hannover. The father was a peddlar and traveled around. Heinrich's father Johann was from Gotha in Sachsen. He was a musician. The family seemd to swith from Lutheran to Catholic and back every time a generation married! Maria SOHNS always said she was from Hannover. In her case it might actually mean the city of Hannover. She was born in February, about 1862-64. I have looked for her in many villages in the area, to no avail, even though the SOHNS name is not common. She was Lutheran. Adolph BLASS was a musician also. He and Maria had a daughter, Johanna BLASS born March 1879. Adolph and his parents and brothers emigrated in the summer of 1879. Maria and the baby followed in September 1879. I am at a dead end with Maria SOHNS because I cannot find her marriage, her parents names, or her birth/baptism record. I cannot find Johanna BLASS's baptism record either. Any suggestions or help welcomed. Janet Cassidy New York
