Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZVC.2ACE/4110.1 Message Board Post: I have two branches of my ancestry that immigrated from Landesbergen & Estorf about 1835. the one is Buchholz who is my gre, great grandmother and the other is Ludwig Schmidt my great, great grand father. They both settled in DuPage County, IL and were married in the U.S. There is also a slight tie to Fischer from the same towns. But I do not have a Dorothea Louis Schmidt in my records. Of course there are 1001 Schmidt in Germany. No Biere in my records. We have been to both Landesbergen & Estorf.

Looking for Heinrich "Henry" Brüggenschmidt: parents; siblings; ship; passenger-list & relatives. Heinrich was born was born 7 May 1825 in Damme, Germany son of Johan Bernard Enneking & Anna Maria Brüggenschmidt. They were married 19 Jan 1820 (1800/50 St. Victor Catholic Church) & the best I understand is: Johan Bernard then changed his surname Enneking to Brüggenschmidt taking Anna Maria’s maiden name. The Brüggenschmidts were originally from Westphalia / Ibbenbühren / Germany / Prussia? Naturalization states: ----“embarked at Rotterdam; and arrived at Baltimore in the United States on the Day of June , A.D. 1849----a native of Oldenburg and owes allegiance to the Grand Duke of Oldenburg"-----. Heinrich then settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, married Katherine Theis (6 Jan 1853 St. Paul’s Catholic Church) moved on to Campbell County, Covington, KY (1860/67 St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church) then finally to Perry County, IN (1868/1904 St. Mark’s Catholic Church). Heinrich’s 25 Feb 1904 obituary states: ----- CHe was born 6 May 1825 in Oldenburg, Province Prus! sia”-- ---Need help on locations stated in Heinrich naturalization and obituary which are conflicting & confusing. The surname Brüggenschmidt has become almost extinct in Germany, I have found only 2 living in Iserlohn which I have had contacts with but no success in my research. 3. Greetings Fred: I do not have much information on my Behnke line My Great Grandmother Juleinia (Julliana ?) Ann Behnke, born approx. 1840, married Johann Haase in or near Thorn, West Prussia (now Torun, Poland)in about 1858/1860. They had five children, Ida, Anna Martha, Maximillian, Johann Julius (my grandfather) and Anne. A photograph I possess of Juliania nee Behnke Haase as a young woman was taken by a photographer in Bromberg (now Bydgoszcz, Poland). Many Behnke's lived in Gross-Neudorf (Nowa Wies Wielka) a town roughly between Thorn and Bromberg, but I have not found any connection there Warren G. The state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) hasn't even existed 60 years yet! Johann Georg Mohrhauser was born somewhere in the state of Hanover. There was no such place as a "Preuben". The fifth letter is not a "b". The fifth letter is the German character "scharfes S" -- ß . The character "ß" is used in many, but by no means all, German words to represent "ss". Thus, another correct spelling would be "Preussen". "Preussen" is simply German for "Prussia" -- just like "Deutschland" is simply German for "Germany".

We can't even go any further back then Otto (who was married to a Minnie Opperman). We can't find anything on the Oppermans, from Wisconson) either. I suppose it is forever a mystery! 3. In 1850, they most likey meant the Kingdom of Hannover. And yes this mailing list is fine for a discussion of Hannover. <snip> It was an independent kingdom from 1814 to 1866 and a province of Prussia from 1866 to 1946. Hanover was originally called the Principality of Calenberg, which was a subdivision of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg. The Principality of Calenberg existed from 1432 until 1803. Hanover is named after its capital, Hanover. <snip> See Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanover_(state) On 7/12/06, Elizabeth Fanslau <efanslau@hotmail.com> wrote: > When someone listed Hannover, Germany on the 1850 census, do you think they > meant the town of Hannover or the "state" of Hannover?
