    3. Hello all, As you probably already know the mailing lists are being moved to a new list management system. This list is scheduled to be migrated on Thursday, August 24 For anyone interested the schedule and additional information may be found http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html Once this list is moved to the new service it should not present any problems but you should be aware that you may need to adjust your spam filters. Officially from rootsweb: <snip> The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com vs. the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. <snip> You will be able to send mail with or without the "-L" AOL users have reported some problems with receiving mail in a timely matter and you can find additional information about this by subscribing to the support group AOLers-RootsWeb Mailing List or simply reading through the list archives. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/AOLers-RootsWeb.html ALSO: subscribers who subscribe in both the list and digest modes using the same email address will no longer be able to do so. You may still subscribe to both but you will need to use two email address. You can always use a free Internet account such as hotmail, yahoo or gmail. I have a few gmail invites left for anyone who would like one. Any questions just email me at jasche45133@gmail.com

    3. Hello, Your question is interesting. Here is an interesting article on the subject if you scroll down a bit. to the section on the 19th century at: How German Is American? http://mki.wisc.edu/HGIA/Settling.htm It also mentions some interesting things about the connections between Germany and Native Americans in the 20th century. I went to see a beautiful singer in Tokyo who is Navajo and German-descent, Sharon Burch. My great-uncle, from the Neumark area set out to homestead in western Nebraska in the 1880's and wrote about meeting some Native Americans or "Indians" there. They were free and curious having come to the camp around midnight. In the morning, the future homesteaders found they were without horses and their cow. Later, they walked and found a Caucasian man with a native wife who had kindly corralled the horses and cow and returned them so all worked out . He was not much more than 20 and I am sure he was not prepared for that before coming. He did not write about other encounters but no doubt had some. Good question. I hope some more details come. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZVC.2ACE/4125.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Jo....in that time frame, I imagine it would have been word of mouth and newspapers....immigrants east of the Mississippi probably didn't have much problem, the Indians having been pretty much subdued/died out by then. Maybe still a problem in Western NY/Canada, but the French and Indian war was long over by then. Out west (I live in New Mexico), the Indian Wars went on into the late 1800s. The German author, Karl May, started publishing his books about Old Shatterhand, et al, in the late 1800's, so anyone going out West could learn something from them. As you may know, today's Germans have a fascination with the "Wild West", complete with theme parks and carnival costumes.

Sometimes they weren't terribly honest about the bad things just about the good things. The Indians were mostly gone from the midwest by the 1830's. I don't know about Canada. Look on the internet for diaries from that era.

    3. Probably the best book written on the subject of immigrant/native relations and the immigrant experience as pioneer farmers in the Nebraska area c 1880 was written by Ole Rolvaag and is titled "Giants in the Earth." It's about Norwegians but the experiences are the same as for Germans. It doesn't gloss over anything but does present a surprisingly balanced (for the time) account. Reading it will increase your respect for both groups and might even change you a little. All the best. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amy and Seiji Uehara" <mars47@pisces.interq.or.jp> To: <NIEDERSACHSEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 20, 2006 6:05 AM Subject: [NIEDERSACHSEN] Re: pre immigration germany... knowledge of native american Indians > Hello, > Your question is interesting. Jo Westendorf Banks Hi Jo, If you would type the town name "Soegel" into Google, you will come up with some great sites for the town. Also there is a site someone else has with a genealogy of their ancestor Heinrich WESTENDORF. Julie Response: Hi Julie, Funny what a little common sense can tell you. It never dawned on me to Google Soegel. I went there briefly & just the picture of Schloss Clemenswerth will be a wonderful addition to my Westendorf notebooks. I suspect the site you mean was either Barbara Salibi's Emslanders.com or Cathy LaBath's celtic cousins.com. Despite the name this site has a great deal on German families in Scott Co., Iowa & surrounding areas. Cathy is my cousin's daughter-in-law. She had the US research & I added what was found in Germany by the researcher Falk Liebezeit who searched the archives at Osnabrueck for me. Now you know how I will be spending my free time the rest of the week. Thanks so much for a nudge in the right direction. Jo Westendorf Banks

    3. Dear Listers, I have a question that I need answered. Recently, we discovered that my cousin's ancestors, Johann Heinrich HANSMEYER, his wife, Christiane MERKAMP/MEERKAMP and their one year old daughter arrived in New York on 30 May 1848 from Bremen on the Bark Mercury. Johann was a Farmer. Are there any other records available in Bremen, which might give a place of origin for this couple and their child besides the destroyed Passenger Lists? Thank you.
