Hi, DAvid - I am a Nicholls, too, but from the Bristol area, mainly, though there were excursions at various times in the 19th C. to Wales and to Dudley, to follow the coal as they were miners.......... Firstly, I'd like to suggest that the difficulty over the birth date might be because ofthe quarterly method of registration. Thus a birthday in OCtober, although it should be included in the December of that year, might JUST, if the birth were registered late, not be entered until the quarter of March the following year. My own mother was born in January but the birth not registered till April.......... Secondly, although the greatest part of my Nicholls family was based around North Bristol, all the names that you mention are family names. There were huge families and who knows that one of them might not have strayed to London. The other factor is that you mention musical ability - and that , too abounds in my family. It is said that my grandfather, THomas Nicholls, was a drummer in "the guards", too, (but before yours) and I am wondering how to find out WHICH guards. He was born in 1864 in Dudley THank you for sharing your findswith us and it speaks well for you how you have written of your father and your family. Best Wishes Iris
