The GRO(S) has instead contracted with Scotland On Line to create a new "ScotlandsPeople" service, as "the official online source of parish register, civil registration and census records for Scotland." The new website at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ states: "Containing almost 37 million names, the ScotlandsPeople database is one of the world's largest resources of genealogical information and one of the largest single information resources on the Web. We provide a fully searchable index of Scottish births from 1553-1901, marriages from 1553 to 1926 and deaths from 1855 to 1951. In addition, indexed census data is available from 1891 to 1901. To respect privacy of living people, internet access has been limited to birth records over 100 years old, marriage records over 75 years, and death records over 50 years. >From the results of an index search made on this site you may view, save and print images of many of the original documents, and order extracts of any register entries of interest. Such requests are forwarded automatically to New Register House, and the requested extracts are mailed to you (airmail in the case of overseas orders)." The 'What's in the Database' page reveals that images are available for births (1856-1901) and deaths (1855-1951) and for the 1891 and 1901 censuses. It also shows plans to extend the database to include the earlier censuses as well. You will find that ScotsOrigins still has a web-site at www.scotsorigins.com/ This now offers - a Sighting Service to "order detailed birth, marriage and death information from Old Parish Registers and Statutory Registers, and from 1861 & 1871 censuses." at a cost of £8 each if you provide full details; - a free search of IGI records (provided you enter the full name of the person concerned), that can be parish by parish; - a Place Name Search for places by County and Parish based on the 1881 census. If you had previously registered as a Scots Origins user, you can still access your previously viewed records including images. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ KATHLEEN CORY Those of you with a keen interest in Scottish research may not be aware that Kathleen Cory has died of a heart attack at the age of 78. Jill Muir, of Oxfordshire FHS, has advised us that Kathleen's obituary appeared in the Scotsman last week "... Her book, Tracing Your Scottish Ancestry, which was published 11 years ago, will be seen as her lasting legacy. The work, which she was revising and updating for a third time when she died ... has been described as the first and best "DIY guide" for amateur sleuths seeking to trace family histories through official Scottish records...."
