    1. [NICHOLLS] Absolum Nicholls - Frances Nicholls - Coleman Nicholls

    3. Researching Nicholls surname in TN, KY & IL: Frances NICHOLLS Wood, born in TN about 1822, may be the sister of Absolum NICHOLLS, who was born in TN about 1817. Frances NICHOLLS Wood was my gg-grandmother: Maiden name Nichols, married name Wood. There are several parallels I have found between Frances and Absolum. Absolum NICHOLLS was born in TN 1817 and Frances NICHOLLS Wood was born in TN about 1822 Absolum NICHOLLS married Martha Warriner in Callaway Co, KY in 1839. Frances NICHOLLS married Thomas WOOD in Callaway Co, KY in 1838 Absolum and Martha's son, Coleman, was born in Callaway Co, KY 1840, and other children after 1840. Frances and Thomas had children born in KY before and after 1843. Their daughter, Nancy J., was born in KY in 1843 assuming it was Callaway Co, KY, since that's where they were married. Thomas WOOD was born in KY about1818, may have been Callaway Co, KY since that's where he married. Absolum and Martha migrated to Illinois before 1847 where more children were born. Martha was born in Illinois. Frances and Thomas migrated to Illinois before 1849 where more children were born. These are too many coincidences not for Absolum and Frances to be siblings or maybe first cousins. Looking for parents and siblings of Absolum NICHOLLS and Frances NICHOLLS Wood. 1. [NICHOLLS] Fw: Texas vital records
    2. Lisa Rhodes
    3. This article was in the Houston Chronicle this morning. I thought everyone would be interested. Online vital records have a bumpy history By MIC BARNETTE The year 2000 was great for Texas genealogists. In June 2000 the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics placed several statewide vital records indexes on its Web site. Researchers were able to go to the TBVS Web site and access the records at their leisure. The data, however, was awkwardly arranged in separate files that corresponded to the year of the event. Each year had to be searched individually. Rootsweb.com, a genealogical research Web site, purchased a set of the Texas vital records data and prepared it for use on its Web site. An enterprising programmer at Rootsweb combined the single-year files and created a search engine that allows users to search all the data files in a fraction of a second. Unfortunately, the gains of 2000 were lost when questions of privacy were raised in November 2001 in a California newspaper article. The California governor threatened to sue Rootsweb for having the state's vital records indexes online. Within a week Texas Bureau of Vital Records officials followed California's lead and demanded that Rootsweb unplug the online Texas databases. Rootsweb complied. The Texas databases that were online included statewide indexes to marriages 1966-1995, divorces 1968-1997, deaths 1963-1998, general indexes to births 1926-1949 and the summary indexes to births 1950-1995. General indexes, incidentally, list names of parents, while summary indexes do not. In Texas, records of marriages and divorces have been maintained on a county level since the days of the Republic of Texas in the 1830s. Counties began reporting this information to the state in 1966 and 1968, respectively. Births and deaths were kept on a statewide basis in 1903. Births and deaths 1903-1997 are available on microfilm and microfiche at Clayton Library, 5300 Caroline, and at courthouses across the state. Earlier this month, Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed SB 861, which closes birth records for 75 years. This law goes into effect Sept. 1. Currently, birth records are open after 50 years. Death records were not a part of SB 861 and remain available to researchers. Indexes for both births and deaths remain open to researchers. There is some good news for those who would like to research Texas vital records indexes without going to a courthouse. Houston genealogist Hugh Adams has taken the vital records indexes formerly online at the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics Web site and formatted them on 11 CD-ROMs. Each letter of the alphabet on each CD includes data from births 1926-1995, marriages 1996-2000, divorces 1968-2000 and deaths 1964-1998. A demonstration Web site may be viewed at www.tvrview.com/. The 11 CDs contain surname data arranged alphabetically. Disk 1 covers surnames beginning with A, D and E; disk 2, B; disk 3, C; disk 4, F and G; disk 5, H and I; disk 6, J-L; disk 7, M; disk 8, N-Q; disk 9, R and T; disk 10, S and X; and disk 11, U-Z. The CDs are available from TVRView-H.C. Adams, 12180 Greenspoint Drive, PMB No. 196, Houston, TX 77060-2002. The 11-CD set is $129; individual disks are $15.50. 2. Gillian Häkli
    3. Hello Listers, Back in 1913 my half-aunt Janet Esther (Essie) Doherty married Henry Charles Nicholls in Vancouver, British Columbia. According to their marriage cert. Henry was the son of Albert Edward Nicholls and Isabel nee Bedford. He was 29 years old, a plasterer and came from London, England. Essie was the daughter of Rev. Edward John Doherty and Eliza (Lily) nee Gartside. She was then 30 and also came from London. My question is: what happened to them after that? I cannot trace them in any records that I know of. Has anyone heard of the Nicholls couple or of Henry's parents? Does anyone have any bright ideas about where I could search? I've even searched in Canada's First World War records to see if Henry served in the Canadian army or was killed. But no mention. I'll be so grateful for any information at all. Gillian Hakli (nee Doherty)

    1. [NICHOLLS] Elijah NICHOLLS (c.1870-?)
    2. Rob Appleby
    3. Can anyone help me identify the birth of my g.grandfather, Elijah NICHOLLS. He was married on the 30th September 1893 to Elizabeth Sharples ORD at the Register Office in Newcastle upon Tyne. The marriage certificate gives Elijah's age as 21, leading to a birth around 1871/1872. Also, from this certificate I can identify that he is a Coal Miner and is the son of Joseph NICHOLLS who had died before the wedding. >From the 1901 census, Elijah gives his age as 30, confirming the birth around 1871, and his place of birth as "Staffordshire N K". However, I can find no entry for an Elijah Nicholls (inc. NICHOL, NICHOLL, NICHOLLES, NICHOLS, NICKALLS, NICKALS, NICKELLS, NICKELS, NICKOLLS, NICKOLS, NICOL, NICOLL, NICOLLS) in the civil register indices between 1870-1874. The only solution I can come up with is that Elijah was possible illegitimate and was therefore registered in his mothers name. After the marriage of his mother to Joseph Nicholls, he then adopted that surname. Would he have had to formally change his name? Where would I find the records of this? My next step would appear to be a review of the 1891 and 1881 census returns in an attempt to locate Joseph Nicholls. From there I should be able to identify the Mother's first name(s). If I can then locate a death certificate [firstname NICHOLLS], which I assume will show her maiden name I could then search for an Elijah maidenname. Can anybody throw any light on this problem? Or, alternatively, identify any alternative approach? Many thanks, Rob Appleby Researching: N.E. ENGLAND: APPLEBY, FLINT, HOOD, MARSHALL, NICHOLLS, PHAROAH, RUTHERFORD

    3. I am not doing too well with my Nicholls family. Daniel Nicholls married Mary Lyddieth on 15th October, 1849 at St Nicholas in Liverpool. Daniel's residence was Struckland St and Mary's was Fox St. His father was William and her parents were James Lyddieth and Maria Rushton. Witnesses at the marriage were Robert and Margaret Lyddieth The first child, George, born but I have no details of where or when and I would love to find any information on this child. The next event I have is the second child, James (my g grandfather), being born in Gundagai, Australia in 1864. The gap is 15 years. I do have information to hand that Daniel and Mary were on the 1851 Census as was her Mother, Maria and her children Robert and Margaret - no mention of her husband, James. Maria is on the 1881 Census living with her daughter Margaret, her husband and their children, but by this time Daniel and Mary would have been in Australia. Any help would be most appreciated. kind regards Val Rickaby Sunshine Coast

    3. Hi, DAvid - I am a Nicholls, too, but from the Bristol area, mainly, though there were excursions at various times in the 19th C. to Wales and to Dudley, to follow the coal as they were miners.......... Firstly, I'd like to suggest that the difficulty over the birth date might be because ofthe quarterly method of registration. Thus a birthday in OCtober, although it should be included in the December of that year, might JUST, if the birth were registered late, not be entered until the quarter of March the following year. My own mother was born in January but the birth not registered till April.......... Secondly, although the greatest part of my Nicholls family was based around North Bristol, all the names that you mention are family names. There were huge families and who knows that one of them might not have strayed to London. The other factor is that you mention musical ability - and that , too abounds in my family. It is said that my grandfather, THomas Nicholls, was a drummer in "the guards", too, (but before yours) and I am wondering how to find out WHICH guards. He was born in 1864 in Dudley THank you for sharing your findswith us and it speaks well for you how you have written of your father and your family. Best Wishes Iris
