Hello Alan I thought I was going to be able to help, but I've just seen your second message with the amended spelling of the name your researching. My family came from an adjacent parish, Lilleshall, which lies to the north of Shiffal. Below are the names I've recorded whilst doing my research, names in caps are my direct antecedents. They're probably of no use to you now but I thought I'd include them anyway as they might be relevant to someone else. Yesterday I received the marriage cert for her father Thomas and her mother Elizabeth Guest and the surname is noted as Nicholds. I have to assume that Nicholds is the correct spelling. Sorry for the confusion. If anyone can connect to Nicholds I would appreciate hearing from them. Alan, "Nicholds" might be correct, but it's very possible that it is an error on the certificate. My great grandparent's marriage certificate spelled his family name wrong. Misspelling and incorrect copying were not that uncommon. When I posted my query on the mail-list I was sure I had the right name for my g-grndmother, Cecilia. Yesterday I received a copy of a marriage cert, for Cecilia's mother and father and it shows that the surname spelling is NICHOLDS. As they were married in Shiffnal, Shrop. I have to assume that that is where they came from. Sorry for the confusion. I am going to repost on the list today with the correction. I am researching Arthur NICHOLLS and his family. Arthur is my Great Grandfather. The information that I have so far is that Arthur was born in 1847 in Norwich, Norfolk (source World Connect Project, Rootsweb) although detail that I have from the 1891 census puts his birth date as 1842 the same age as his wife Charlotte Marie Johnson. I have located Charlotte in the 1851 cenus (Norfolk) her father being Joshua Johnson and mother was Harriet Johnson, they lived at Grimstone, Freebridge Lynn, Norfolk. I cannot locate Arthur NICHOLLS in the 1851 cenus of Norfolk. Arthur and Charlotte had 9 children. Horace W NICHOLLS b17/2/1867 in Cambridge, Ernest F NICHOLLS b1869 in Cambridge, Gertrude E NICHOLLS b 1871 in Cambridge, Mabel E NICHOLLS b 1874 in Cambridge, Herbert Arthur NICHOLLS b 1876 in Cambridge, Gilbert E NICHOLLS b 1878 in Sandown Isle of Wight, Stanley Hugh NICHOLLS b 1879 in Sandown Isle of Wight Harold Edgar NICHOLLS b 30/5/1881 in Sandown Isle of Wight and Frank Percival NICHOLLS b 6/5/1883 in Sandown Isle of Wight. Harold Edgar is my Grandfather. I know 3 lines in this family ie Horace W NICHOLLS, Stanley Hugh NICHOLLS and of course Harold Edgar NICHOLLS. >From a biography written about Horace W NICHOLLS ("The Golden Summer - The Edwardian Photographs of Horace W Nicholls" by Gail Buckland) I know Arthur's family lived in Newnham Grove, Grantchester, Cambridge. Arthur and his brother Henry were Photographers along with Horace, Mabel, Herbert, Gilbert and Stanley. Arthur had a family Photography business in Marine Terrace, Sandown Isle of Wight. In the 1891 census of Isle of Wight the family home was in Cyprus Villa, Fitzroy St. Sandown. I would like information on Arthurs ancesters as well as information on Arthur's 6 other children. I would appreciate anything as my research has "hit the wall". Regards.............................Bob Nicholls, South Australia
