P.259 Samuel Walker of Watertown, MA was one of the pioneer manufacturers of kerosene. He was born in Langdon, NH Feb. 9, 1818 son of Gilson Walker and his wife, Abigail (Carter) Walker. He was a descendant in the seventh generation of Capt. Richard Walker from whom the line is traced directly through Samuel, Joseph, Seth, Samuel, Abel to his father Gilson Walker. Capt. Richard Walker was born in England in 1592 and emi- grated with his family in 1630, first settling at Lynn, MA. He became a freeman in 1634, rose from an Ensign to the Captaincy of the military company at Lynn, MA and joined the Ancient and Honroable Artillery in 1638. He lived to be ninety-five years old and died at Lynn, MA May, 1687. He reared several children. The 2nd child of Capt. Richard Walker was Samuel Walker, born in England about the year 1615. He moved from Lynn MA to Reading, MA and later to Woburn, MA where, it is known he was one of the highway surveyors in 1662 and a Selectman in 1668. His occupation was that of a malster. In 1675 he was licensed to keep a tavern, he being the first person to open a house for public entertainment in Woburn. He died Nov. 6, 1684, aged sixty-nine years. The maiden name of his wife is unknown but records show he was the father of several children, of whom Joseph Walker was next to the eldest. Joseph Walker was born at Reading, MA in 1645. He was a tithing-man of Billerica, MA in 1667, was made freeman in 1678, and was a Representative to the General Court in 1679. On Dec. 15, 1669 he m. Sarah Wyman b. April 15, 1650, dau. of John and Sarah (Nutt) Wyman of Woburn, MA. Joseph Walker died in July, 1729 aged eighty-four years; His wife died Jan. 26, 1728. They had ten children of whom Seth Walker was the youngest. Seth Walker was born at Woburn, MA Oct. 12, 1691. He resided at Groton, MA as early as 1734 and in 1741 he went to what is now Westminster, MA where he erected a grist-mill, the first ever operated in that area. In 1750 he removed to what is now Charlestown, NH and his name appears in the roster of a company raised the same year by Capt. Phineas Stevens to protect the frontier settlers from the anticipated attacks of the French and Indians. On April 4, 1716 he married Eleanor Chandler, born in Concord, MA in 1695 dau of William and Eleanor (Phelps) Chandler of Andover, MA. Samuel Walker 2nd, known as Capt. Samuel Walker was the third child of this union. He was born August 30, 1721 at Shirley, MA. He was engaged in agricultural pursuits during his active period, and occupied a prominent place among the leading men of that community, serving as Town Treasurer for twelve years. He worked his way forward from a subaltern to the commander of the militia company and was one of eighty men from Shirley, MA who responded to the Lexington Alarm on April 19, 1775. His wife was Mary Stratton, dau. of Ebenezer and Lydia Stratton of Watertown, MA They were married on Dec. 20, 1750 and they reared seven children of whom the fourth born was Abel Walker. Six of them married and removed to N.H. where they became pioneers in the settlement of the new county. Capt. Samuel Walker died Dec. 15, 1817 aged ninety-six years and his wife died Dec. 7, 1794. Abel Walker was born at Shirley, MA July 11, 1759. He settled at Charlestown, NH and engaged in farming. Many years later when that town was divided, his property was included within the limits of Langdon, NH. On Feb. 22, 1783, he married Hannah Page. She bore him twelve children, of whom Gilson Walker was the eldest. Abel Walker died when he was seventy years old. His wife lived to be eighty-three years. Gilson Walker, father of Mr. Samuel Walker of Watertown, MA was a prosperous farmer of Langdon, NH. Samuel Walker, 3rd the subject of this sketch, was edu- cated in the schools of his native town and worked as a farm assistant until he was twenty-five years old. He then engaged in the produce business in Boston, MA as a member of the firm of Lane & Walker, which two years later was changed to Sartwell & Walker, and under this name continued in business for fourteen years. In 1859 Mr. Walker started in the manufacture of kerosene from bituminous coal imported from Scotland, he being the 2nd to enter the business; and since the discovery of oil wells in PA,, he had been engaged in refining crude petroleum for illuminating purposes. This concern, which was known as Samuel Walker & Company, since its establish- ment was at lst located in East Cambridge, MA but at the time of 1898 the works were at Somerville. Mr. Walker lived at 7 Winter Street, Watertown, MA since July, 1854 and took an active part in public affairs. He served on the Board of Selectmen for three years, and was Representative to the legislature during the years 1881 and 1882 and held other offices of responsibility and trust. On Sept. 12, 1848, he m. Nancy W. Pierce b. Aug 21, 1827 dau of James and Nancy (Waitt) Pierce of Marble- head, MA. She was the mother of six children, three of whom were living in 1898: Abbie Walker b. 1849; Alma b. 1855; Mabel Waitt Walker b. 1858; Abbie M. Walker who m. June 6, 1872 Charles B. Gardner and had one living son; Roy Richardson Walker b. 1873. In Oct. 1881 Alma Walker became the wife of William Channing Whitney of Minneapolis, Minn. Their children were Marion and Katherine Whitney. Mabel Waitt Walker m. John Dana Dickerson of Boston on April 12, 1877 and had two children: Mabel Draper Dickerson b. 1878 and John Walker Dickerson b. Oct 20, 1879.
