Source: Biographical Review Life Sketches of Leading Citizens of Middlesex County, Massachusetts 1898 Biographical Review Publishing Company - Boston "Who among men art thou, and thy years how many, good friend? - Xenophanes. p.669 Deacon John H. Kimball, one of Littleton, MA ablest and best known farmers was born in this town October 28, 1822, son of John and Lucy (Hayward) Kim- ball. His paternal grandfather, Daniel Kimball, was an early settler of Littleton, where he owned a farm, and was diligently engaged in tilling the soil until his death which occurred May 24, 1813 at the age of sixty-two years. John Kimball, Deacon John H. Kimball's father, was a lifelong resident of Littleton and was a useful and highly esteemed citizen. He was one of the most extensive farmers of his day, his business ability and capacity for hard work being the means of his acquiring unusual success in agricultural pursuits. In politics he supported the Whig party, and was a member of the Board of Selectmen for some time. He lived to be seventy-five years old. His wife, whose maiden name was Lucy Hayward, became the mother of three sons and five daughters. Of these, two sons and one daughter were living in 1898, namely: John H. Kimball, the subject of this sketch; Allen W. Kimball who resided in Littleton. Frances E. Kimball the widow of Benjamin Edwards, and resided at Lowell, MA. Edward E. Kimball, Lucy A. Kimball, Louisa M. Kimball, Emily F. Kimball and Sarah E. Kimball. Mrs. Lucy Kimball died at the age of seventy years. John H. Kimball began his education in the towns of Littleton and completed his studies at the Groton and Ashby Academies. He assisted in carrying on the farm until he was twenty-two years old, at which time he bought the property where he resided and where for over fifty years he conducted general farming. He owned one hundred and twenty-five acres of excellent land, comprising one of the best farms in this section; and from time to time, he made various improvements. Politically he was a Republican; and, tho not an aspirant for public office, he took a lively interest in whatever pertained to the general welfare of the town. On May 14, 1846, Deacon Kimball was married to Nancy A. Tuttle, who was born in Littleton on Jan. 20, 1826 daughter of Nathan H. and Nancy Tuttle. Of this union were born seven children as follows: Lucien S. who died in infancy; Alonzo H., who resided in Medford, MA; Ellen A. principal of a home school in Worcester, MA., Charles H., a resident of Tyngsboro, MA, Austin T., who lived with his father and carried on the farm, Emma P., a music teacher in Lowell, MA; and Lizzie G. widow of Charles A. Hamlin, late of Westford, MA. In 1896 Deacon and Mrs. Kimball celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on which occasion their kinsfolk, friends and neighbors assembled in large numbers to extend them hearty congratulations. Both were members of the Unitarian Church of which he was a Deacon for a number of years, his grandfather having long ago served in the same capacity.
