    3. Farns10th@aol.com wrote: > Surname: SPAFFORD > Source: History or Charlestown, NH - Fort No. 4 by Rev. Henry H. > Saunderson > 1876 <SNIP> Hi Janice Thank you very much for publishing these transcriptions of Charlestown, NH families and also making them available on the website! I've been able to make a lot of use of them as I directly descend from PARKER, SARTWELL, & PORTER and have connections to others. Perhaps you could clear up what has been a point of confusion for me. I'm continuing the post on the list in case anyone else is interested or has input. Saunderson indicated in the original book that Lieut. Isaac PARKER (b. 1685) was a son of Joseph & Elizabeth PARKER and that he married a woman named Ruth of unknown surname. This appears to be contradicted by other sources including Butler which you quoted elsewhere and charts that I have recently come across that show him married to Ruth BLOOD and as the son of Isaac & Estor (FLETCHER) PARKER and the grandson of Abraham & Rose (WHITLOCK) PARKER. Considering that Saunderson must have had the same sources available to him, I'm confused as to how he made the error or if he was, in fact, in error. Any help with this gratefully appreciated! One of my lines is, I believe, from Thomas PARKER (b. 1757) the son of Isaac PARKER Jr.(b. 1709) by his second wife Mehitable. Thomas PARKER married Betsey PORTER (whose direct line I have no clues on as yet) and they moved in 1800 to Compton, Quebec. Familiar Charlestown surnames in Compton, Quebec were PARKER, FARWELL, SPAFFORD and probably others. Best regards Bob

    3. Hello, I am seeking information about the Walkers who settled in Croydon, NH in late 1700s and early 1800s. In particular, I am seeking the parents and D.O.B. of Joab Walker, who married Thankful Kempton in 1826. A search of the NH Bureau of Vital Statistics came up empty handed. Thanks! Jonathan Lamy

John Spafford erected the lst saw mill and corn mill at Fort No. 4 by a contract with a committee appointed by the proprietors of Fort 4. They were put in operation in 1744 but were burned on the 19th of April 1746 by a party of Indians who took Capt. Spafford, Lieut. Isaac Parker and Stephen Farns- worth prisoners and carried them off to Canada. The mills were rebuilt by Capt. Spafford. They were burned a 2nd time in 1757 by a party of abt seventy French and Indians, when Samuel Colefax, Deacon Thomas Adams and David Farnsworth and two others were taken prisoners. They were again rebuilt and not subsequently destroyed but remained until Hall's Mills were erected at Charlestown, NH, in their place. Capt. Spafford became widely know and his grain mill was extensively patronized by the early settlers west of No. 4 and on the upper Connecticut and Amonoosuc. The inhabitants of Haverhill, Newbury and Lancaster, MA were under the necessity as they had no mill nearer, of coming to Charlestown,NH to get their grain ground and so of numerous other towns. The names of individuals are sometimes given who visited it. Thus a visit by Gen. Bailey is preserved in the following: "General Bailey of Newbury town, To old No. 4 to mill came down Good Captain Spafford, God rest his soul Ground his grist, but would take no toll. This is a tradition whether fact or fable. Capt. David Page of Lancaster frequently made journeys to Charlestown for the same purpose. It is evident that Capt. Spafford was a most useful citizen and had the entire confidence of the proprietors and inhabitants, not only of Charlestown but of the settlements above and beyond Fort 4. He was one of the ten male members who helped form Rev. Bulkley Olcott's Church. He was also honored by the town which elected him on two occasions one of its selectmen. p.553 His son, Bradstreet Spafford was a member of Capt. Phineas Stevens' company in 1750 and was also 1st Lieutenant in Capt. Abel Walker's Co., No. 1 in Colonel Bellows Regiment 1777. He removed from Charlestown to Piermont, NH and in 1783 he and his two sons, Nathan and Asa Spafford commenced the settlement at Fairfax, VT. He was a moderator of the lst town meeting and the lst selectman elected in town. He is buried in the cemetery at Fairfax, VT but it has no headstone. His children: 1. Prudence Spafford b. 1753 2. 3. Hi George, I have information on a William Darling b. Lemington, VT 30 November 1810(History of Newport pg. 363) died in Newport, NH 11 October 1884 of an impacted colon, his first illness, age 73 yrs. 11 months, 11 days (NH Argus & Spectator, 17 October 1884), son of Thomas and Betsey (Pickens) Darling (Newport VR). William was a joiner. He married Ann Kempton, daughter of Ephraim and Elizabeth (Cutting) Kempton, 22 December 1883 in Croydon, NH by the Rev. Jacob Haven (Croydon VR, 424). Ann is positively identified as a daughter of Ephraim from her Newport death record. I have lots more information on these families which I found in a book on Eva Belle Kempton. If you are interested in more and can't find a copy of it let me know and I will be more than happy to xerox the information and send it to you. Hope this helps. According to the Hubbell Genealogy, he was variously a mechanic, cabinet maker, manufacturer, furniture dealer, and department store operator. He was possibly s/o John A(DAMS) Jr and Asenath (White) b Dec 10 1835 mar Abbie A Wight 1859 Newport of Vt. Issue: male b Nov 24 1859 Newport. There is now a NEAT little booklet out titled The Old Red School House District No 7 Newport New Hampshire which is very well written, and gives 2 mentions of Bill Hubble. Any info re this family will be greatly appreciated.
