    3. Hi, I don't have answers, just more info on NH VRs and a suggestion. You probably already know some of this.... NH Vital Records at the VR office in Concord and on-line at FamilySearch.org & Ancestry.com are transcriptions of the town records. In the early 1900s the state asked the town clerks to transcribe their records onto the 3x8" cards that make up the State VRs. They are considered official records, and are as complete as the efforts of town clerks that transcribed them (some doing a better job than others.) Until about 1835, when uniform register books with columns for specific information began to be used, most of the town clerks kept the vital records of their towns "family style" listing family members together usually with birth dates, some death dates, and sometimes the marriage date of the parents all in one spot, and it is widely accepted that these events didn't necessarily occur in the towns they were listed. (i.e. As you noted in your original post that the marriage was recorded in Chester, NH but may not have occurred there.) Permission for a minor to be married may be recorded in different places, including the record itself, some town records and some county probate records. When looking for that needle in a haystack, keep in mind the county & town boundaries that changed, especially for early records. My suggestion: while Rev. Flagg's records may or may not give you the information you want, it is worth looking into. If you haven't already checked the NH Historical Society Library in Concord, you may want to look there, or ask there, about his records and for any suggestions their knowledgeable librarians might have. According to a 1993 description ("Directory of Repositories of Family History in NH" by Scott E. Green, pub Clearfield Co of Baltimore MD) of their holdings, they have "4000 files of local churches and religious groups." I believe their catalog may be available online, but I'm not sure how complete it is, and I find that speaking with their librarians is always helpful & informative. I hope something here is helpful, Mary Ellen Moulton Genealogy Volunteer at the NH VRs. -----Original Message----- From: nhrockin-request <nhrockin-request@rootsweb.com> To: nhrockin <nhrockin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sun, Jan 17, 2016 3:10 am Subject: NHROCKIN Digest, Vol 11, Issue 2 RootsWeb NHROCKIN Mailing List http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/NH/rockingham.html Today's Topics: 1. I?m wondering if anyone knows if Rev. Ebenezer Flagg?s records have survived and where they might be found. Rev. Flagg was a Congregational Church Minister in Chester, Rockingham County, NH from ca. 1736 onwards. He married my ancestors, DUDLEY GILMAN and MARY HARRIMAN in 1779, and because Mary was a minor at the time, I?m hoping that the record might mention parental consent, as hers are unknown. [although there are guesses on the net?] I understand that Rev. Flagg was also one of the first ministers in the area to accept Marriage Licenses, which might have been the attraction, as my people settled in Belknap County, NH.. Would there have been a copy of a marriage License kept by the State or the County Record Office? Do they survive? I have contacted the Chester Congregational Church and while they do have some records dating back to that time period, they do not have Rev. Flagg?s records of baptisms, marriages or burials. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Stephen ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sat, 16 Jan 2016 12:09:10 -0500 From: Stephen Wood <stephe.w300@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [NHROCKIN] Gilman/Harriman To: Cindy Clark <cynthia_clark@charter.net>, nhrockin@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <CAE-Vu+aMaagmj8dJ8Akm1ZoOu=6SWSQ3VGt1_aH2-5EbR0sNWQ@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Hi! Thank you for your reply. This is indeed the family but it might be misleading. I believe this information is based on the entry in the Belmont Clerk & Town Records and the event may have not taken place there. It was those same records that gave me the name of Rev. Flagg as the minister who married them. [Available to browse at familysearch.org] Dudley was likely born in Deerfield, Rockingham County, NH, but Mary's place of birth is not known as of yet. I'm hoping that Rev. Flagg's records might contain additional clues useful in the search for Mary's parentage. 3. Hi Mary Ellen! Many thanks for your suggestion - I will follow up on it. I think people were probably concentrating on the wrong location in the past [Belmont, Belknap Co.] for Harriman information, so I'm hopeful.
