Rockin Rooters, Last week I made some revisions to the Welcome Message that everyone receives when joining the NHROCKIN-L mail list. The message for NHROCKIN-D is similar, but obviously is different in appropriate places. Since many of you have been subscribers since almost the beginning (March of 1998), I know that your version probably looks considerably different from the version below. That's also true for even you more-recent subscribers. It is my hope that each of you will take the time to read the message below and save it for future reference. Thanks for your interest and cooperation. ********* Welcome to the NHROCKIN mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to NHROCKIN as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. PLEASE save a copy of this message for your future reference. The cities and towns of Rockingham county are: Atkinson, Auburn, Brentwood, Candia, Chester, Danville, Deerfield, Derry, East Kingston, Epping, Exeter, Fremont, Greenland, Hampstead, Hampton, Hampton Falls, Kensington, Kingston, Londonderry, Newington, New Castle, Newfields, Newmarket, Newton, North Hampton, Northwood, Nottingham, Plaistow, Portsmouth, Raymond, Rye, Salem, Sandown, Seabrook, South Hampton, Stratham, and Windham. Queries and discussions about genealogy, history, people, and events in the above places (ONLY) are appropriate topics for this list. Please help us by keeping at least some part of each your postings connected to the above. While your posts are not screened in advance, all posts are monitored, and these rules are enforced. If you have some doubt, chances are it is for good reason. The List Administrator is always available to answer any questions about the appropriateness of a subject matter BEFORE it is raised. Please take advantage of that help when in doubt. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to: NHROCKIN-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and NO additional text, including no name, address, or "signature." Please do NOT send messages or queries to the above address. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" (without the quotation marks) to: NHROCKIN-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to NHROCKIN-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to NHROCKIN-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to NHROCKIN-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. 6. Please don't send documents attached to your messages addressed to the mail list (attachments). Always send attachments to individuals only, and if the attachment is a lengthy document or an image, even then, it is considered a courtesy and a wise move to seek permission first. 7. Since many subscribers of mail lists often subscribe to several lists at the same time, their daily mail is often more than they are able to read. Such persons frequently read no further than the subject heading of your message. Therefore, you will avoid the arbitrary deletion of your unread message if you make it a habit to carefully word your subject heading to make it as informative, yet efficiently brief as possible. For example, a query about a person might be titled: DOE, John, 1750-1820, Exeter. Now if your message is deleted without reading, at least it shouldn't be deleted by a subscriber with information about your "John DOE." 8. NHROCKIN No-No's: a. See #6, above; b. Posts with absolutely no Rockingham connection (birth, residency, marriage, death, historical or geo-political event); c. "Flames" sent to the list. Zero tolerance. NO exception. Strictly enforced. d. Advertising or offers of genealogy services for a fee or products for sale. While individals may privately consent to pay fees for extraordinary services involving more than a few moments of time and trouble, all such agreements are strictly at the sole risk of the parties involved. No responsibilty is assumed by the list administrator for any enforcement on behalf of either such party. Seller and buyer beware! e. Opinions sent to the list about what should be, or should not be "on-topic," or the "appropriateness" of a subject matter for list discussion. This topic is reserved as the exclusive domain of the list administrator. Opinions are welcome, but only if they are directed to the list administrator privately. His decision on the matter is final. For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included below. Thanks and happy hunting! ********* -- Dick Marston, Rockingham County, NH, GenWeb County Coordinator, [ http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/1706/ ]; Administrator: NHMERRIM, NHROCKIN and MARSTON mail lists
