    1. Jeremiah Moulton's parents
    2. Dear Bill, You asked: Jeremiah and Elisabeth (Perkins) Moulton had two children born in York, ME (Lydia and Joseph, 1730 and 1732). Question: is this Jeremiah Moulton the son of Robert and Lucy (Smith) Moulton, b. in Hampton December 1, 1696? The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and NH by Noyes, Libby and Davis Pages 497 &498 gives "Jeremiah 3d, m. (int. 19 Apr. 1729) Elizabeth Perkins of Wells" as the son of "Lt. Joseph b. 18 Jan. 1679-80, m. 30 Dec. 1697 Mary Pulman who d. 24 June 1722; m. 2nd in Berwick 6 Dec. 1722 Mary (Cutts) Spencer". Lt Joseph was the son of Jeremiah Moulton, Esq. of York. Jeremiah m. between 12 Aug. 1673 & 24 June 1678 Mary Young (daughter of Rowland). Mary died 3 June 1723. Jeremiah then married in Sept. 1723 Mrs. Alice Chadbourne Donnell. Jeremiah died 26 Dec. 1731 (Vital Records of York , transcribed by Bragdon & Frost ) Page 381. Jeremiah was the son of Thomas Moulton and Martha ____. Thomas was baptizted at great Great Ormesby, co. Norfolk (England) 16 July 1608 s. of Robert and Mary (Smith). He and his brother John were some of the first settlers of Hampton, NH. Later Thomas moved to York, Maine. There were many Jeremiahs in York. In the York Vital Records, page 119, the Jeremiah who married Elizabeth Perkins was called "Jeremiah Moulton Terts"(= Tertius (the third)). Later he is called "Jeremiah Junr" when the births of his children are listed. When the older Jeremiah died the others moved up in the numbering system. The first Jeremiah had a nephew (my relative), grandson and a grandnephew all named Jeremiah. It makes for much confusion. Other than the Gen Dict. of ME & NH and the Vital Records of York Maine books, there is a good article from the New England Historical Genealogical Register, Vol. 141, Oct. 1987, pages 313 - 329 by William Haslet Jones on the Moulton Family and their English background. Hope this helps you. Elaine Wood
