Hello Pamela, Historian Charles Brewster in ":Rambles About Portsmouth." vol. 1, [1859], gives us some background on George Jaffrey. Brewster tells us that Newcastle was part of Portsmouth until 1693. Just past the bridges leading from the limits of Portsmouth into Newcastle the homes of a number of prominent citizens stood to include the "...Honorables Sampson and Jacob Sheaf, Theodore Atkinson, George JAFFREY..." On pg.84, Brewster is quite specific as he makes reference to the south part of the island and at least in 1859 one could yet see the "early Jaffrey residence," the original residence having been constructed "about 180 years ago..." Perhaps someone on our list will have more complete and current knowledge of Newcastle/Portsmouth landmarks and sites that may relate to the Jaffrey-Wentworth names; and what might be known of the JEFFRIES family that you also mention. Good luck on your searches... Bob Jackson ---
