    1. "Scotch Irish Research"
    2. Patricia Gregg
    3. I have spent less than 6 months delving into genealogy, and do not have the experience of many of you. I have been on a few mail lists only three days and have received some valuable information, and I believe given some out. However, I feel this to be true. Just from the experiences I have had, just finding a name or a location is never enough. Until I can get to know that person, "walked in their steps" I am not satisfied. If we can get into the Who first, then when, where, what, and finally why and how, and help each other, I believe the experience will be richer for us all. Perhaps the information is a little know fact about weather, dress, environment, industry, etc. It could be important to our collective understanding. The experiences of the Scotch-Irish are a much hidden portion of American History. In all my years, I don't remember being taught about them, and the contributions that they made, however, through research, I am amazed. This makes me want to follow their voyage to and to see American as they first saw it. I want to get into their heads, understand their thinking, see how they could survive. Posting hisitorical information for others to see could be a great way to share. In that vein, I will share an important document which could be the starting point for many of you. Posting historical information for others to see could be a great way to share. How fortunate for us that the founding fathers of New Hampshire understood the importance of History, even when it was being made and took steps to preserve the past for us to learn from. Today we are the History of tomorrow, it is this fact that drives us all. We see how very similar we are in our struggles and desires. Perhaps you have a distant relative that was part of the illustrious group. You must understand that not everyone found on this list made the voyage, and many that did not sign did. Copy of the Memorial to Governor Shute 26th day of March, Annoq. Dom 1718. "To His Excellency the Right Honourable Collonel Samuel Shutte, Governor of New England. We whose names are underwritten, Inhabitants of ye North of Ireland, Doe in our own names, and in the names of many others our Neighbours, Gentlemen, Ministers, Farmers, and Tradesmen Commisssionate and appoint our trusty and well beloved Friend, the Reverend Mr. William Boyd of Macasky, to His excellency the Right Hourable Collonel Samuel Shutte governour of New England, and to assure His Excellency of our sincere and hearty Inclination to Transport ourselves to that very excellent and renowned Plantation upon our obtaining from his Excellency Shutte encouragement. And further to act and Doe in our Names as his Prudence shall direct. Given under our hands this 26th day of March, Annoq. Dom 1718. Following were the signatures or marks of the persons. The names that follow were copied by the historian of Londonderry, E.L. Parker in 1890 and then again by Charles Knowles Bolton in 1910. "Below this address are the autograph signatures, arranged in eight columns of equal length. Where Mr. Parker's rendering of a name differs from my own I have given Parker's form below in italics. A question mark indicates that although we may agree, the form is still open to question. An asterisk marks names beginning with a small written b. In these cases I read "Black," not "Clark," "Beverelle," not "Ceverelle," and "Blaire ' 11 not "Claire My study of the petition has been aided by holding a negative photographic plate before a strong light. I am indebted for this negative to the kindness of Miss Edith Shepard Freeman, Librarian of the New Hampshire Historical Society."
