Hello- I have a New Hampshire puzzle. My New Hampshire ancestry is as follows: My ancestor, Jonathan BLUNT, b 1708 in Andover, MA, d 1762 in Chester, MA. He married Mary _________ and they had children: Joshua, Samuel, Sarah, Mary, Jonathan (b 1753, the next in my line-and my puzzle), John, Sarah and Mary. The surname of Jonathan's wife, Mary, has been a mystery. I have uncovered some clues. A recent computerized search through Ancestry.com of the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire turned up information about Humphrey WILSON of Exeter which mentioned Mary WILSON, wife of Jonathan BLUNT. Further exploration has led to the following: Mary WILSON, b September 19, 1711, in Exeter, NH, married Jonathan BLUNT. Mary was the daughter of Thomas WILSON and Mary LIGHT, both of Exeter NH. Thomas WILSON was the son of Humphrey WILSON and Judith HERSEY. Mary LIGHT was the daughter of John LIGHT and Dorothy PIKE. Now my puzzle: the race of Jonathan Blunt, supposedly the son of Jonathan Blunt and Mary (probably Wilson). Jonathan, b. April 16, 1753, in Chester, NH, (son of Jonathan and Mary) left New Hampshire at some point, enlisted in the Continental Army out of Palmer (Hampton), MA when he was 24. He served for six and 1/3 years as a mattross, married Mehitable LYON of New York and died in New York. Jonathan Blunt is listed in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of Revolution as "height 5'10", complexion, brown". He is listed in a DAR booklet about minority soldiers of the revolution as mulatto. A book about black patriots of Hampton MA lists Jonathan Blunt, husband of Mehitable Lyon, as black. Family stories did not pass down any indication of black ancestry so the DAR and Hampton MA book information was a surprise. Contact with the last two sources has not produced substantial information about black ancestry. However, I have found sources that indicate that the Light family of Exeter, NH and Jonathan's Uncle Isaac Blunt of Andover, MA, both held slaves..... Who am I? Do I have a second continent to explore? Is there anyone else out there exploring the same family? Barbara Ziek
