Greetings. I am the listowner of HUNTOON-L@rootsweb.com, which is devoted to the descendants of Philip HUNTOON, who first appeared in the public record when he received a grant of land in Exeter in 1698. In 1703 he moved to Kingston, where he lived until his death in 1752, except for a two-year captivation when he had an all-expense-paid trip to Canada courtesy of some local Indians. His descendants were numerous in New Hampshire, although towards the end of the 18th century most of them were living around Unity in what was then Cheshire County. Philip signed his own name HUNTON, but public records frequently spelled it HUNTUNE or HUNTOON, and it is by the latter spelling that most of his descendants are known. As far as I can figure out, the name HUNTOON comes from no other place. There were other early HUNTON settlements, on in particular in Virginia, but the double OO appears to characterize only the New Hampshire branch. If you meet a Huntoon tomorrow, I believe it is almost certain that he or she will be a descendant of Philip. A genealogy of the Huntoon family was published in 1881, but like all genealogies of that time, it is almost completely lacking in source documentation. I have decided to compile an updated genealogy of the first four or five generations of Philip's descendants. While I know how to consult the standard sources (town records, etc.), living as I do in Southern California makes it unlikely I will stumble across things that I don't already know about. If any subscribers to NHROCKIN-L have any special knowledge about the Huntoon family in Rockingham Co they would be willing to share with me, I would be very grateful, and will fully acknowledge your help in the final publication.
