Christine, Back in July, you asked about the Cook/French graveyard in Epping. I had a chance to visit this graveyard on Saturday. It was quite an adventure. The graveyard is on Dimond Hill Rd. at the intersection of an old rangeway. Neither of these roads is passable without 4wd, and then you would be stretching your luck, especially with all the rain we have had lately. I found the site, and its location matches the information in the Epping cemetery book and in the NHOGA database. In addition I had along my GPS to verify the location. However, I am not convinced that this site is actually a graveyard. The only evidence is a series of cut granite posts along the stone wall. Yet these posts do not enclose anything. The are all in a straight line and don't appear to be fencing for a graveyard. They extend for quite a few yards -- much too long. There have never been many people living in this part of Epping, so there would never have been a need for such a large graveyard. The land behind the fencing is much to rough to have been used for burials. There is no sign of any gravestones, not even field stones. Finally, if this area was used as a graveyard, it is very old. The use of cut granite as fence posts is not historically consistent with such an early period. Thus I would rather doubt that there is anyone buried at this site. If there is other evidence to suggest that there was a graveyard on the land, I would look elsewhere. The piece of property that contains this site is a large tract of woodland. It would be very easy to lose track of a graveyard in the underbrush. There is supposedly another graveyard on this same lot, further south along Dimond Hill Rd. -- a Towle graveyard. Since I am looking for Towles In Epping, I searched for this one also. When the Epping cemetery book was researched, they were not able to locate this graveyard. I did not have any better luck. I will try to find out more about both of these sites. Regards, Clark Bagnall
