He married (2) MARY BREWER1 21 Aug 1656 in Boston, Suffolk, MA1, daughter of THOMAS BREWER. Notes for WILLIAM LANE: William Lane, the ancestor of the Lane families, was a resident of Boston in 1651. He was admitted freeman at that place, May 6, 1657. Regarding himself or his connections we know nothing further, save the names and time of birth of his children, which are found on the Boston records. Tradition, however, says that he was of English origin, and also that a brother settled in Beverly or Gloucester and another in Maine. There were others of the name of Lane in this country at an early period [NEHGR 27:176]. Notes for MARY BREWER: "Of Roxbury" at the time of her marriage [NEHGR 27:176]. Child of WILLIAM LANE and MARY BREWER is: 2. i. WILLIAM2 LANE, b. 1 Oct 1659, Boston, Suffolk, MA; d. 14 Feb 1749, Hampton, Rockingham, NH. Generation No. 2 2. Notes for WILLIAM LANE: William removed from Boston to Hampton sometime in the late 1680s. He is said to have been a tailor by trade, and lived near the spot where Hampton Academy now (1873) stands [NEHGR 27:176]. JOSHUA LANE: Joshua lived about half a mile north of the old Baptist meeting-house, on the road toward North Hampton. He owned a small farm there, and also worked at his trade, that of a shoemaker and currier. Joshua and his wife, Bathsheba, united with the Congregational church in Hampton March 10, 1718. He was afterwards for many years a deacon in that church, and authentic traditions tell of his eminently christian character, adorned with those virtues which made him a faithful friend, a parent diligent in leading his children in the ways of righteousness, a kind husband and a support and ornament to the church of God. His wife was an active, intelligent woman, and well fitted to assist in forming the character of their children to habits of industry and piety. The effect of the training of these servants of God was seen in the character of their children, nearly all of whom became at an early age professors of the religion of Jesus. Deacon Joshua Lane was killed by lightning, June 14! , 1766. The thunder shower had nearly passed by, when, going to the door, he was instantly killed [NEHGR 27:177]. More About DEA.
