I have since found his memoirs (at the UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library). He states he was born October 7, 1830 in Exeter, New Hampshire. He came from a family of machinists and worked as a machinist in the family business before going to sea. He sailed out of Boston for CA in November of 1849. Is anyone acquainted with this family? Are there still Moores in Exeter, NH that might be related? Augustus made a rather impressive mark on CA before moving to Southern Oregon. Margaret Wells
