Much of my information has been taken from the Vital Records of Rye, NH, June Berry's family group sheets of the various Berry families of NH, The New Hampshire Genealogical Record, and The Berry's By The Beach (Sylvia Fitts Getchell, l980), Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, New England Marriages (Torrey), wills and probate records. From Getchell's publication is the following regarding Rachel Berry. Rachel Berry, dau. of William and Jane _____ Berry, m. abt. 1666, John Marden. They lived at Great Island(New Castle) and at Sandy Beach (Rye). John Marden arrived in Portsmouth, NH prob. between 1658 and 1664, and he d. after 1702. His will was made 11 Aug 1698 and was proved at the same time as the nuncupative will of his widow Rachel (Berry) Marden on 12 Feb. 1706/7. Children: 1. Daughter, m. ______ Conner. 2. James Marden, b. abt 1667-70, d. bet. 1710 and 1718; m. 23 Oct 1695, Abigail Webster. She was b. 19 May 1676, d. 19 June 1750 in 75th year, dau. of Stephen and Hannah (Ayer) Webster. Prob. 7 ch. Abigail (Webster) Marden m. (2) Samuel Berry, son of James and Eleanor (Wallis) Berry and they had 4 ch. 3. Thomas Marden 4. John Marden, b. abt 1671. Living Aug. 1749; m. 16 Nov 1699, Alice Parker, dau. of Thomas and Mary (Shaw) Parker. 8 ch. 5. William Marden. Living as late as 18 June 1751. He m. Dorcas ______. 8 ch. William Marden inherited some of the Berry lands, and inherited also the John Marden homestead. 6. Elizabeth Marden, m. abt 1701, Nathaniel Rand, son of John and Remembrance (Ault) Rand of Oyster River. 6 ch. Nathaniel Rand's parents were both slain in the 1694 Indian massacre at Oyster River. His grandparents Francis and Christian Raqnd were also Indian victims, having been killed in the 29 Sep 1691 attack on the Brackett and Rand homes in Rye. 7. Mary Marden, m. (prob. Wm.) Jones, fisherman of New Castle. She was living in 1706/7, but prob. died before 1714. Maryellen

In addition to Maryellen's great summary of this family, I can add the following additional "tidbits": John MARDEN -- Appraiser with John HUNKING of Estate of William KING of Isle of Shoals - May 1664 (per Probate Records of the Province of NH, vol 1 (1635 - 1707). State Papers Series, vol 31) Witness for Mark HUNKING - 1666 Took the Oath of Fidelity - 1666 Among those listed as "belonging to Sandy Beach [Rye]" in 1668, (per "History of the Town of Rye", by Langdon B. Parsons, p70-71) Taxed as "John MARDEN" in 1690 and as "John MARDEN, Sr. in 1693. Served as "Surveyor of Highways" for 1696-1697 Fragments of New Castle, NH Town Recods 1696 - 1858. FHL #985,185 - Item 3 "Minister's rate for New Castle In New England, to be collected by William Jones, Constable - 1703: John MARDIN, 0£, 8s 0d Daughter "Miss" MARDEN -- Married James CONNER of Little Harbor, who served as a Witness in 1691 (per "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine & New Hampshire", by Sybil Noyes, Charles T. Libby and Walter G. Davis (Baltimore: Genealogical Publ Co, 1979), p160) Son Thomas MARDEN -- Born abt 1677 at Sandy Beach [Rye}, NH Taxed at New Castle in 1696. Probably died before 1698. He married Sarah O'SHAW, daughter of Daniel O'SHAW and Damaris SEAVEY. A Petition 20 June 1715 of the heirs of Daniel O'SHAW (of New Castle) to divide "our father's" estate is signed by "Sarah MARDEN" [per Probate Records of the Province of NH, vol 1 (1635 - 1707). State Papers Series, vol 31.
