    1. Re: [NHROCKIN] Town of Piscataqua in Rockingham County NH
    2. Carolyn G Depp
    3. From "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire" by Sybil Noyes, Charles Libby and Walter Goodwin Davis comes the following clarification: "PISCATAQUA: The pioneers recognized two settlements--Upper and Lower--each taking in the settlers on both sides of the river. Among mariners, the name persisted for the whole river. See Portsmouth, Kittery and Dover". Dover (NH) was known as Upper Piscataqua before it was incorporated as "Dover" in 1640. The Maine side of the Piscataqua River was early called "Piscataqua" below Kittery [ie: the neighborhood opposite Dover Point] and Newichawannock above Kittery. Later the whole area about 25 miles long was included in Kittery township by the river. Localities along this stretch included Braveboat Harbor, River's Mouth ("The Point"), Spruce Creek, Crooked Lane, Great Cove, Boiling Rock, Long Reach, Kittery, Cold Harbor, Sturgeon Creek, Thompson's Point (South Berwick line), Newichawannock, Quamphegan, Salmon Falls (on the Berwick line opposite Rollinsford), and Great Falls (Berwick and Sommersworth). Hope this helps. ~ Carolyn Depp ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 19, 2006 9:03 AM Subject: [NHROCKIN] Town of Piscataqua in Rockingham County NH > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Richards, Ruggles > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/iQB.2ACE/716 > > Message Board Post: > > I have data for John Richards dying about 1755 in Piscataqua.
