Greetings, I wonder if anyone has any insights into the apparent mystery of Joseph Adams Janvrin Sr, born about 1786 in (likely) Rockingham County. The going theory about Joseph Adams Janvrin's parentage is that he was the son of John Janvrin (b Jan 9 1754 to John Janvrin and Elizabeth Stickney in Newington, NH) and Elizabeth Gilman Adams (b in Newington, NH to Dr. Joseph Adams and Joanna Gilman and baptized there September 6, 1761). John Janvrin and Elizabeth Gilman Adams married January 25, 1784 at Portsmouth NH. To be sure, there is only one known Janvrin family in the area (and possibly the entire country) at the time. They were the descendants of Jean Janvrin (b abt 1671 in St Hellier, Isle or Jersey to Jacques Janvrin and Marie Le Couteur), who immigrated to Rockingham County New Hampshire and married Elizabeth Knight (d/o Captain John Knight and Bridget Sloper). Jean Janvrin was a mariner, merchant, and possibly smuggler who died in Lisbon, Portugal in 1717. Only one of his children, John Janvrin (b 8 July 1707 in Portsmouth, NH) who married Elizabeth Stickney (b 12 Jan 1721/22 in Newbury, MA) on 9 Oct 1751 in Hampton Falls, NH, produced any heirs. (Jean Janvrin's widow Elizabeth Knight remarried Rev Joseph Adams of Newington, NH, who is theorized to be the great-grandmother of our Joseph Adams Janvrin.) John Janvrin and Elizabeth Stickney lived in Newington NH for many years and had four sons - William, James, George, and John. The marriages and offspring of three of them are well-documented, and as such they can be ruled out as fathers of Joseph Adams Janvrin. One of the other four sons (besides John) did marry an Adams, and did actually have a son named Joseph Adams Janvrin, but William Janvrin married Abigail Adams (daughter of Dr. Joseph Adams and Joanna Gilman, and sister of Elizabeth Gilman Adams) in 1796 (about ten years after the birth of our Joseph Adams Janvrin), and their Joseph Adams Janvrin married Lydia Ann Colcord at Exeter, NH November 24, 1822. As I said, our Joseph Adams Janvrin was apparently born about 1786, possibly in Portsmouth (where John Janvrin and Elizabeth Gilman Adams were married in 1784), possibly in Seabrook (where a John Janvrin household is listed in the 1790 census for Seabrook), or possibly elsewhere in Rockingham. I haven't confirmed it, but Elizabeth Gilman Adams appears to have died sometime in the 1790s, and John Janvrin apparently remarried a Swett. Our Joseph Adams Janvrin married Joanna Thurlow January 8, 1809 at Newbury Mass, and appears to have resided in Newbury for the rest of his life. Thank you for any help you might be able to provide. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
