Hi Harlow, I was at the Exeter library yesterday (a couple of towns over from Portsmouth). (I am sure the Portsmouth Library would have more in their collection). I did some digging on the Plumers living in the Portsmouth area. Couldn't locate the burial of Benjamin though. I did search the typed (pre-computer) collections of Portsmouth South & North Cemeteries, very large. If you think these are family members then Benjamin is probably buried there. Here is what I came up with; -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The only place that I found your Benjamin was in the 1867 Portsmouth City Directory, pg 64: Plumer: 1.Benjamin , clerk, boards at 4 Franklin St. 2.Cyrus, baker, 5 Church St, lives at 4 Church St. 3.George W., baker, (he has 2 bake shops) 1. 21 1/2 Congress & 2. 31 State St.; lives on 12 Fleet St. 4.Moses, shipcarpenter, house 59 Daniel St. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Plumer Genealogy, by Sidney Perley; (wondering if this is your Benjamin?) pg 199, # 1201, Cyrus Plumer (8), born Dec. 6, 1817. He married, first, Marian Groghan Nov. 2, 1840; second, Mary Lizzie Martin; and, third, Nancy Blaisdell. Children: 1800-I. Benjamin(9), born April 26, 1842, in Rollinsford; married Ellen M. Thank you very much. There's a lot here that I did not know, and enough that I did know that I can tell this is all valuable to me. I am relearning a couple of things from this experience. One is how fortunate several of you are to live near such fine libraries. The other is how fortunate I am, here in VA, that so many on this list are willing to help me. The first group below is the right family. Cyrus is Benjamins father, George W. is Cyrus's brother and Moses I don't recognize immediately, but Cyrus had a grandfather named Moses Yeaton, so he may be a cousin. I have Perley's book. Mostly it checks out with what I have found in the local records. Sometimes a date will be off by a couple of days or somesuch. For example Marian Groghan was Merriam (or Miriam, depending on where you look), not Marion, or at least that is true in the town records and family bible I've seen. She was Merriam Catherine Grogan. Perley was perhaps relying on family informants with imperfect memories of the people and dates, but he's still pretty good. He has Ellen Moulton as a wife of Albert C(arter) Plumer, which corresponds to what I have in a family bible record and which I believe is in the town records, but in the graveyard record she is Helen. I believe Perley is correct on this one. Yes that is the family and that is Benjamin's wife--Ellen Marie (Frye) Plumer, who is buried in Harmony Grove Cemetery, part of what is now called South Cemetery. Much of what is here gives me information I did not have--mostly I have the birth dates and marriage dates for these people, but not death dates for the more recent generations who did not show up in the LDS films of Portsmouth records. There are many details, such as the two bake shops, that I did not know. So there is a great deal here which I am very pleased to learn and I appreciate greatly your taking time to find it and copy it all out for me. I don't recall whether this appeared on the list, but Melinde did send me a reference in the MA death records for Benjamin's death. I have called the town clerk in the town where he died and it seems he was visiting a family in that town and died in their home. He was 88, which I suppose partly excuses him, but that does seem rather inconsiderate. I don't know why no record was found elsewhere, but the death is on file in Holbrook, Norfolk, MA, where there was no reason to expect it to be and I probably would never have known that had I not asked on this list. Incidentally, the clerk in Holbrook was, as has every MA clerk I've dealt with, very friendly and helpful and volunteered to look up the record while I was on the phone when all I had asked for was the fee for a certificate. 9kats wrote: > Hi Harlow, > I was at the Exeter library yesterday (a couple of towns over from > Portsmouth).
