    3. For those of you who may have ancestors in Canada during 1911, I thought you might like to search these census. They just became available online. Cheryl 1911 Canadian Census Now Available The census is indexed only by province, district, and sub-district. There is not yet a name index for this census. A finding aid is available to assist in determining the appropriate sub-district. Images of census pages can be viewed as .pdf files or as MrSid images (which download faster). The quickest way to review the census is to read through the MrSid images, then switch to the .pdf file of the page to download or print out the image. 1. Maria Louisa Bell of Newcastle, b. ca. 1822
    2. Harlow Chandler
    3. I have been a subscriber to various Rootsweb lists for almost a decade now (I was rather late to computer genealogy). In the first years many people helped me a great deal, but it has been quite a while now since I have asked a question about my own family on a list and longer since anyone has been able to help with what I did ask. So the response to my question last week about Benjamin Plumer has amazed me. The quality of the information has been superb, the sources people have had access to has really surprised me, and I have met some very fine people with whom I have very much enjoyed corresponding. I could take the treasures I have been given here and go away happy or I could be greedy and ask for more. And here I am, asking for more. Benjamin Plumer's wife was Ellen Marie Frye, daughter of William T. Frye and Maria (or Marie) Louisa Bell. William's line goes back to the immigrant John Frye or Frie, and I'm content with what I know about that side of Ellen's family. But Maria Loisa Bell has been a problem for me. The marriage record in Portsmouth says Maria was "of New Castle." I have been through such Newcastle records as are available on LDS film, and of course these are incomplete. Maria was born around 1822, and I guess probably in Newcastle. The census shows one family that might be hers, and that agrees with what appears to be a reconstruction of a family group in the records by a Newcastle clerk . There is a family group for Benjamin Bell, born Sep. 14, 1784 to George Bell and Hannah Amazeen which lists children: George Joseph Frederick Sarah Maria Benjamin Nothing more is given--no dates, spouses, etc., but this family, if it isn't a clerk's fantasy, would fit the little I know about Maria. I'd like to know a whole lot more than I do though, so any information or suggestions about the Bells would be most welcome.

    3. Thank you very much. There's a lot here that I did not know, and enough that I did know that I can tell this is all valuable to me. I am relearning a couple of things from this experience. One is how fortunate several of you are to live near such fine libraries. The other is how fortunate I am, here in VA, that so many on this list are willing to help me. The first group below is the right family. Cyrus is Benjamins father, George W. is Cyrus's brother and Moses I don't recognize immediately, but Cyrus had a grandfather named Moses Yeaton, so he may be a cousin. I have Perley's book. Mostly it checks out with what I have found in the local records. Sometimes a date will be off by a couple of days or somesuch. For example Marian Groghan was Merriam (or Miriam, depending on where you look), not Marion, or at least that is true in the town records and family bible I've seen. She was Merriam Catherine Grogan. Perley was perhaps relying on family informants with imperfect memories of the people and dates, but he's still pretty good. He has Ellen Moulton as a wife of Albert C(arter) Plumer, which corresponds to what I have in a family bible record and which I believe is in the town records, but in the graveyard record she is Helen. I believe Perley is correct on this one. Yes that is the family and that is Benjamin's wife--Ellen Marie (Frye) Plumer, who is buried in Harmony Grove Cemetery, part of what is now called South Cemetery. Much of what is here gives me information I did not have--mostly I have the birth dates and marriage dates for these people, but not death dates for the more recent generations who did not show up in the LDS films of Portsmouth records. There are many details, such as the two bake shops, that I did not know. So there is a great deal here which I am very pleased to learn and I appreciate greatly your taking time to find it and copy it all out for me. I don't recall whether this appeared on the list, but Melinde did send me a reference in the MA death records for Benjamin's death. I have called the town clerk in the town where he died and it seems he was visiting a family in that town and died in their home. He was 88, which I suppose partly excuses him, but that does seem rather inconsiderate. I don't know why no record was found elsewhere, but the death is on file in Holbrook, Norfolk, MA, where there was no reason to expect it to be and I probably would never have known that had I not asked on this list. Incidentally, the clerk in Holbrook was, as has every MA clerk I've dealt with, very friendly and helpful and volunteered to look up the record while I was on the phone when all I had asked for was the fee for a certificate. 9kats wrote: > Hi Harlow, > I was at the Exeter library yesterday (a couple of towns over from > Portsmouth). 3. I hope I have thanked individually each of those who have helped me, but in addition to one more thank you to all I'd like to mention that listmembers have provided me--overnight!-- with evidence of the death year I was seeking, and quite remarkably the reference for the death record which is in a wholly unexpected town under a minor misspelling of the name. The Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics could not do that. Apparently this was too easy for you. I'll be back with something more challenging. Best wishes and sincere appreciation to all, Harlow
