According to History of Rockingham County, New Hampshire and Representative Citizens by Charles A. Hazlett, there was an ancient burying ground in a field between Mr. Butler's barn and the east side of Fish Street. This is where the victims were buried. Not being familiar with the lay of the square, I have no idea how close this old burying ground might be to it. Is Fish Street still there? Thanks for your help. Erin

The Lanes were numerous in Hampton. Descendants of William Lane Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM1 LANE1. He married (1) MARY. She died 2 May 1656 in Boston, Suffolk, MA1. He married (2) MARY BREWER1 21 Aug 1656 in Boston, Suffolk, MA1, daughter of THOMAS BREWER. Notes for WILLIAM LANE: William Lane, the ancestor of the Lane families, was a resident of Boston in 1651. He was admitted freeman at that place, May 6, 1657. Regarding himself or his connections we know nothing further, save the names and time of birth of his children, which are found on the Boston records. Tradition, however, says that he was of English origin, and also that a brother settled in Beverly or Gloucester and another in Maine. There were others of the name of Lane in this country at an early period [NEHGR 27:176]. Notes for MARY BREWER: "Of Roxbury" at the time of her marriage [NEHGR 27:176]. Notes for WILLIAM LANE: William removed from Boston to Hampton sometime in the late 1680s. JOSHUA LANE: Joshua lived about half a mile north of the old Baptist meeting-house, on the road toward North Hampton. He owned a small farm there, and also worked at his trade, that of a shoemaker and currier. Joshua and his wife, Bathsheba, united with the Congregational church in Hampton March 10, 1718. He was afterwards for many years a deacon in that church, and authentic traditions tell of his eminently christian character, adorned with those virtues which made him a faithful friend, a parent diligent in leading his children in the ways of righteousness, a kind husband and a support and ornament to the church of God. His wife was an active, intelligent woman, and well fitted to assist in forming the character of their children to habits of industry and piety. The effect of the training of these servants of God was seen in the character of their children, nearly all of whom became at an early age professors of the religion of Jesus. Deacon Joshua Lane was killed by lightning, June 14! , 1766. The thunder shower had nearly passed by, when, going to the door, he was instantly killed [NEHGR 27:177]. More About DEA. In December I discovered that my local Barnes and Noble has a monthly genealogy meeting (second Tuesday of every month) for anyone interested. They review books and magazines and work on individual's problems. The next one is tomorrow at the Manchester, NH, Barnes and Noble at 7PM. Does anyone know if the other Barnes and Nobles (Newington, Salem, and Nashua) also do this? Melinde

I found Nathaniel Wheat in Rockingham County, NH age 50-60 in 1840. There are several Wheats living in Hillsborough County during that time. In 1850 there is a Nathaniel Wheat age 70 living in Hillsborough county. He is a physician according to that record. He is not the head of household, but unfortunately, I can't make out the person's name who is! Your Nathaniel may have moved to be with relatives as he grew older, or this could be a completely different fellow, and he is not listed in the 1840 because it only named Head of Household. Just a thought.

Rockingham Probate Court 10 Route 125 Brentwood, NH 03833 Mailing Address : P.O. Box 789, Kingston, NH 03848 Judge : Hon. John R. Maher, Administrative Judge Register : Andrew Christie Jr. Phone : (603) 642-7117 Hours : Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm You should be able to call them to discover their procedurings for requesting wills. I have done much the same thing in Carroll County, and had no problem. It is unlikely in the extreme that your will will be online. You're going to have to do it the old-fashioned way and write for it. If Nathaniel died testate, there will be a will, and an executor/executrix. If he died intestate, there should be record of the administration of his estate. The family SHOULD have requested an administrator/trix to probate the estate. If he died intestate, then his assets (i.e. the estate) will have been inventoried and divided among his living heirs. It won't matter if he didn't approve of a marriage or not. HOWEVER, if he died testate (with a valid will presented to the court), his wishes will probably have been followed, and the will will state only what the decedent wanted. This address should get you started, at least. Didn't the California death record list parentage for Hiram? You should be able to google for Rockingham County resources online. You can request records on Nathaniel Wheat from the State Archives of NH. They have a wide range of information available. http://www.sos.nh.gov/archives/genealogy.html Sincerely, Constance

Hi, The town of Brentwood has a computer printout of the stones in the cemeteries in their town. Contact their town clerk concerning it: RFD 1, Dalton Rd. Brentwood, NH 03883 telephone in 1993 603-642-8817 Also, the secretary of the Exeter Cemetery could probably give you better info on the Exeter cemeteries. I believe she reads this list. You could probably get her office number by calling the Exeter Town Clerk (603-778-0591 in 1993). Good luck. Mary Ellen Moulton Plaistow, NH
