Betty. If your research leads you back to England, there are free resources sponsored by rootsweb....Free Reg and Free Cen and Free BMD.. They are works in progress, although Free BMD has quite good coverage now. The Genes Reunited site is not a rootsweb site. It is free to join and to upload. It is free to reply to someone who contacts you. It does cost, however, a nominal amount really, for the basic subscription. The basic subscription allows you to be able to initiate a contact with someone else. If you are in the US, they will give you the price in $$$ as opposed to UK pounds. I am currenty a free member. I have found living second and third cousins over there. Or, more accurately, they found me. If you are a free member, once someone else makes contact, you can re-contact them as many times as you like. I just checked www.rootsweb.com and there is no List or Board for "Genes Reunited." But, I've been aware of that web site for several years, and I might belong to it. I don't think I've used it, though. http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/ Most of my ancestors came from the UK in early 1600's. And, I don't research them before that. But, I have 2 sets of great-grandparents where they or their parents came to Canada, first, during 1800's. They are the ones I have the most trouble with. Researching records in the UK in late 1700's is difficult. On quick look, I'm not finding a description of that web site, or the history of it. But, I just noticed this at the bottom of the page: .. Oops, I clicked on the "US Flag" and nothing happened. I just saw a comment on-line which says that you can use that site for free, but, if you want some information from it, you need to buy "credits." That's the same for other web sites involving UK genealogy, especially for Ireland. .. One thing researchers should check often is the WorldConnect Project at the home page for www.rootsweb.com Many researchers post information there. And, there is a fairly new "search the archives" feature - where you can put in your ancestor's name and see if anyone else has mentioned your ancestor - in the archives of all of the Lists. Betty. I am just theorizing. Maybe the fewer postings reflect the more that is available now online. And available increasingly for free. I am on some UK mailing lists also, and I have also noticed fewer postings there. And. In New Hampshire, we are again blessed with free access to Ancestry.com at our libraries. In the UK, there is a Genes Reunited list. I was thinking something similar here in the U.S. could be exciting. Through Genes Reunited, I have found living relatives. If I were to campaign for a new site right now, it would be to set up something similar here in the U.S. to Genes Reunited. I checked the archives, and there have been fewer than 30 postings for an entire year or so. When I went to find that List, I discovered that there is a NHGEN List. I checked that archives, and it is a very inactive List. I'm guessing that is because very few people know about it. I just joined that List and posted a brief query about my KIDDER ancestors. I also noticed that the New-Hampshire Message Board is not gatewayed to the New-Hampshire List. And, I noticed that I had never mentioned my KIDDER ancestors on that Board. So, I posted there. Unfortunately, on the "Unknown" category, my posting was - not allowed ! Turns out only "specific questions" can be posted there, and not general information. I'm considering whether to request that a new List be started up. Perhaps New-Hampshire-Research. And, have a Message Board started up to go along with it. But, I'm waiting to hear back from the Admin of the NHGEN List. www.rootsweb.com Since this will be a RAINY week, maybe researchers will have more time to post a query on this List. :o) Or, post information about a town or city you are interested in ! Josiah and wife Sarah "Sally" Blanchard were born and married in Chester but moved for a time to Anson, Somerset, Maine. There appear to be no records available in Maine. After the death of the mother, the family returned to Chester. Eliza was still young enough to be in school. The sisters moved to Hallowell, Maine by 1850, but their father remained in Chester (Auburn) until his death in 1858. Does anyone have a suggestion for finding a will or school or church records that might help me to confirm or disprove the connection?
