    2. Jorfo
    3. I have recently learned that Daniel(4) SMITH of Exeter, NH, m. Polly PICKERING. Daniel was born in Ipswich, MA, on Sept. 2, 1705. He was of Exeter by 1744. They probably married around 1730 as their 6th child, Joseph, was born in Stratham, NH, on April 2, 1742. Daniel was a son of Daniel(3) [Richard2, Richard1] SMITH of Ipswich, MA. Thats all I know about Daniel or Polly, so anything at all that you can add would be appreciated. === John R Folsom Orlando, FL jorfo@prodigy.net

    3. Rockin' Rooters: I thought I'd take advantage of this lull in the posting of queries to announce that while the stock market may be going into hibernation with the bears, our Rockingham's star is bullish and rising! We now have a healthy two-thirds of our towns and cities covered by volunteers with the recent addition of Hampstead and Plaistow. That's 24 out of 36. Not bad, eh? Also, our mail list membership is well over the 250 mark at 256. There's never been a better time to get those answers to your Rockingham queries. -- Dick Marston Rockingham County, NH, Mail List (NHROCKIN) Owner.

    3. Hi to all -- will someone please tell me a definitive source for the surname "Hilton" for the Rebecca who was the wife of Thomas Roberts? Here's my reasoning: We have seen her identified as "Rebecca Hilton", but have not found this in any definitive source. In fact authorities such as The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, by Noyes, Libby & Davis, do not speculate on her name, other than that Thomas Roberts' Will identifies his wife as "Rebecca". Articles on the Hiltons, who were early settlers with Roberts, do not list them as identified with a Rebecca. The connection between Thomas Roberts and the Hilton brothers was such that if he had married their sister, or any other member of a Hilton family, it would seem that it would have been mentioned by one of the historians or genealogists. While one must always be cautious about conclusions drawn from silence, in this case it would seem that the absence of identifying Rebecca as a Hilton would be strong inference that she was NOT a Hilton. Robert Charles Anderson, in The Great Migration Begins, includes accounts of both Edward Hilton and William Hilton, referring to them as brothers, and including their family information as known. He does not include any sister named Rebecca. Indeed, it seems to me that "Hilton" is the least probable surname for Rebecca. Can someone show me differently? Harman Clark P.O. 3. John -- I don't want to add to the problem, but there is a "Memoir" in NEHGR 111:239 which has Daniel (4) Smith married to Mary Kimball, daughter of Moses and Susanna (Goodhue) Kimball. I realize "Memoirs" are not the same as researched articles, and don't offer this as the solution. I have not otherwise researched Daniel (4) I am interested in a definitive answer to your question. 3. I just need to add my 2 cents worth. Several years ago I owned a custim frame shop. We were frequenlty asked to frame newspaper articles. We dissolved an alka-seltzer tablet in water, then soaked the newspaper in the solution for several hours. When we removed the paper, we would press it between blotters (do they still make tose?) until dry. We ended up with a white document and had removed the acid. Sue Lang anchorage, AK

In my paperwork I see Nicholas Norris & Sarah Coxe, and their son Jonathan Norris marrying a LYDIA - with no last name indicated. Any chance the spelling for LYDIA's family name might also be HURD? I'll check around and see what I can find that might lead to Lydia and parents. Regards, Bob Jackson ----
