    2. Dick Marston
    3. I'd like to thank cousin Sue Lang of Anchorage, Alaska, for a suggestion that she felt would make the Rockingham county GenWeb page more useful. Now, when you scroll down near the bottom of the home page, near the links to the US GenWeb and the NH GenWeb pages, you will find direct links to Rockingham's 6 neighboring counties. Next to your own "Bookmarks" or "Favorites," this could be the fastest route to facilitate your research in the area. I hope you find this helps. Please let me know whenever you have an idea you think might improve the usefulness of this page. 3. New Hampshire Society of Genealogists (NHSOG) and New Hampshire Old Graveyard Association (NHOGA) are pleased to announce the addition to NHSOG web site of the N.H. Old Graveyard Association database of N. H. burial sites. NHOGA has spent over twenty years compiling a comprehensive listing of all burial sites in New Hampshire. NHSOG is pleased to join in a cooperative effort to present this information as a research aid to genealogists. NHOGA Master Burial Site Listing attempts to list every known burial site in New Hampshire. Sites vary from large public cemeteries to abandoned rural graveyards containing only a single grave. The listing includes exact map coordinates for locating remote sites, but does not contain the names of the individuals buried there. Additional information about NHOGA and its activities can be obtained by sending mail to Doris Ashton, Corresponding Secretary, P. O. Box 225, Ossipee, NH 03864. 1. Deeds 1731-1768
    2. Gail Brown
    3. Thanks to all who answered my question about quit claim deeds. I think I understand the concept now. Now, if anyone has tried to read these old deeds, you know how difficult that can be. I've got most of the abbreviations figured out and am able to decipher most of what I have, but there are a few words I'm clueless on 1. looks like "mefsuage" (or "mefsvage") - I know that the "f" is really an "s", but can't make "messuage" mean anything. The phrase is "to one messuage or tract of land" Does this mean "measure"? 2. a funny little squiggle, like a fancy "p", that appears before syllables, like _sents, _mises, _sence, _sonally - This must be "per" or "pre" or "pro"? So that these words are "presents", "promises" (or "premises"), "presence", "personally"???? Now, wouldn't it be nice if there was an 18th century spell-check attached to my word processor?! In addition to the collateral names I mentioned yesterday, Georg Duncan was the Justice of peace, and Josh Peirce, the Recorder. Gail

    2. Eva Wallace, RN BSN LNC
    3. Hello! I'm looking for information on an Andrew Simpson b. c 1697 and Elizabeth Patten b. c 1700. They lived in Nottingham, Rockingham, NH. They are my gggggg grandparents. Elizabeth was killed by two Indians and is buried in the Square in Nottingham. I have read a rather graphic description of her death by Sabatis and Plautsawa. She is buried there with two men who were also killed the same day in 1753 (approximate). Is there still a Square in Nottingham and is she there? Their grandson and my gggg grandfather Josiah Simpson born c. 1762-63-d. 18 Feb 1837, in Nottingham, Rockingham, NH, was in the Rev War, married a Catherine Kitteridge (variations of that surname!) and came to Meigs Co, OH, in early 1800's with his brother Robert (c. 1764 in Nottingham, Rockingham, NH - Robert married a Miss Lydia Longfellow. I would like to get some information about the Patten.Kitteridge and Longfellow families as I don't know who the parents were or from where they came. I would also like to have information about the Simpson line as well. I have my line down fairly well. I have other information as well that I will be happy to share. Thank you, Eva Wallace Elkview, WV

    3. Quoting Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens to NHROCKIN-L on 6 Oct 98, > Can anyone shed any light on the WHICHER/WHITCHER family in NH? A little. I think a more appropriate subject would be WHITTIER/ /WHICHER/WHITCHER in view of the following. There exists an article "Descendants of Thomas Whittier in New Hampshire" by Rev. W.F. Whitcher printed in The Granite Monthly, volume 4, 1881. The author brings up an interesting comment about the name WHITTIER. He believes it was originally pronounced as two syllables, Whit-tier, the "ti" of the second syllable having the sound of "ch" as the "ti" in "patient." He goes on to say the name was found to be spelled thirty-one different ways, the most common of which were WHITTIER, WHITCHER and WHICHER; and in some cases, the name for a single person was found spelled in all three ways. > I have Reuben Whicher b. Northfield NH April 19 1794, died > ca. 1869 age 75 years m. Dorothy Osgood. He is son of William > Whicher b. Nottingham NH and Anna Sanborn Confirmed in the article. > One of his brothers, Benjamin, became a Shaker, gave his farm > to that body and the first settlement of Canterbury Shakers was > built on his land. Albert Armour Gorrell b. April 16 1817 > Northfield NH d. Dec 28 1893 Northfield NH. The article says five children; (1) Clarisa as you have it above with no further details; (2) John M. b. 1817; (3) Horace, b. 1825; (4) Abbie, b. 1830; (5) Mary J. b. 1831. > William Whicher was first married to a Miss Elliott of Epping > and their children were David, Jonathan, William & Polly. Confirmed by the article. > William lived to be 73 years old. The article only says that William was born in 1758. 2. Quit Claim: When an third party individual (such as a family member or inlaw) can be percieved to have a possible claim on a piece of property that is being transferred by a seller to a buyer. These third parties will often be required to sign a "quit claim" to leave the transfer unencumbered by any possible future claims they might have. They literally "quit" or give up any and all claims on that piece of property. I suppose that it doesn't have to be family either, any individual who might have a real or percieved claim could sign a quit claim In my case I have a quit claim where my grandmother and grandfather, plus all my grandmother's sisters and their spouses but one signed a quit claim when my great grandfather sold his house and land in South Gardiner, ME. to the remaining sister for $200 and her promise to take care of him until his death. 1. Deeds 1731-1768
    2. Gail Brown
    3. I need some legal expertise - am going through deeds on FHC microfilm, from 1731 through 1768, all involving Robert Clark and his sales or purchases of land in Londonderry and the surrounding area. 1. If a deed including Robert's wife Letitia does not appear until 1743, does this mean they did not marry until then? Her name appears with his on several deeds after that date, but none before. 2. Some of the deeds mention a quit claim - could someone explain that phrase is simple to understand terms? I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go along in the task of transcribing these deeds. In the meantime, in the deeds I looked at yesterday (yrs. 1731 - 1743), people he bought land from or sold land to were Thos. & Mary Calwell, Wm & Mary Calwell, Thomas Richardson, John Durham, John Maclaughlin, John Anderson, John Caldwell, James Leslie, Alexander and Margaret Calwell, James Lindsay, James Gordon, James Chambers. If any of these names is familiar, please let me know. I'll have the microfilm on loan until mid-November. Thanks, Gail
