    1. FOSS Family Inquiries
    2. Ellen Bisson
    3. Several of you expressed interest in the FOSS family. Although it is not a line with connections to my John Knowles family of Hampton, it pops up in a genealogy I just received from the Midwest Historical & Genealogical Society (MHGS) in Wichita, KS. The document I requested is actually a hefty genealogy of the Trefethen & Dalrymple families, abt 90 pgs, pub 1994 and includes profiles of many other NH families, among them the FOSS family. Entries for FOSS: 1. John Foss b ca 1634; m Mary Berry & children 2. Elizabeth Foss (d/o John & Mary Berry Foss) b 1666; m Nathaniel Bachelder & children 3. Samuel Foss (s/o John & Mary Berry Foss); m Mary Hinkson & children 4. Joshua Foss (s/o John & Mary Berry Foss); m Sarah Wallis & children 5. Hannah Foss (d/o John & Mary Berry Foss); John Jenness & children 6. Nathan Foss (s/o Joshua & Sarah Wallis Foss); m Mary Tucker & children 7. Job Foss (s/o Joshua & Sarah Wallis Foss); m Sarah Lang & children 8. Wallis Foss (s/o Joshua & Sarah Wallis Foss); m Mary Dowrst (I think this might be Dowst???) & children 9. Jane Foss (d/o Joshua & Sarah Wallis Foss); m William Palmer & children 10. Hannah Foss (d/o Joshua & Sarah Wallis Foss); m Samuel Saunders & children 11. Mark Foss (s/o Joshua & Sarah Wallis Foss); m Amy Thompson & children 12. George Foss (s/o Joshua & Sarah Wallis Foss); m Mary Marden & children 13. Samuel Foss (s/o Nathaniel) bpt 3 Jul 1762; m Salome Trefethen & children. The data appears on pgs 27-30 and I would be glad to mail copies to any of you interested in the FOSS family. 3. My LUCAS family was found almost by accident by a researcher tracking another line. Daniel LUCAS - no dates & wifeb Barbara - no dates daughter Jane LUCAS m Neal McGAFFEY 19 Dec 1727 Pembroke/Pembrook? Because her father initially opposed the marriage, Neal m Jane using the alias Andrew MILLER. Her father's will of 1733 (NH state papers 34:400-1, pg 10) includes, "I give unto my beloved Sonne be the Law Neall M'Gaghe and his wife Jean M'Gaghe, aless Luckas, my daughter, ten shillings and no more." Ref made to "John Bean of Exeter & his cousins" ppg 23, 29, 32 for family >From "Neal McGaffey of White Hall, Illinois, Paternal Ancestry & Descendants" by Laura McGaffey Clarenbach, 1980. 3. Dear Rockingham County List--I'm trying to track down a James Lucas and his wife Charity, who resided in Corinth VT (Orange county) in the late 1700s. Since many of the people in that area, and everyone associated with this family, came from Rockingham county (Northwood, for the most part), I am assuming that James Lucas and his wife did as well. Additionally, I understand there are some Lucas placenames in the Northwood area. (Lucas pond, etc.) The History of Corinth VT 1764-1964 (1964) states that James was born May 21, 1744, his wife Charity Feb 20, 1749 (no birth places are mentioned). Their children are listed as: Sarah, b March 30, 1768 Jennea, b Nov 27, 1769 Betty, b Feb 3, 1772 Susanna, b May 1, 1774 Thomas, b May 18, 1776, d May 18, 1853, his wife Mehitable d Feb 1, 1854, their dgtr Dorothy d Dec 22, 1840 Benjamin, b 1779 Molly b April 22, 1782 Susanna, the 4th born, is my 4th g-grandmother. She married Moses Wallis, son of Wm Wallis, a "gentleman of Northwood." I have quite a bit of information about this family taken from VT Land and Vital Records for Orange county, and would be happy to share it with any interested persons. Meantime, does anyone know of Rockingham County Lucases who might be connected to James & Charity? Thanks for any help you can give, Michele Stepto

    3. Dear Baker, I am sorry I have nothing on the Lamprey's. I am just beginning to work on the Andrew Simpson and Elizabeth Patten progenitors for the Simpson's in NH, ME, VT, PA, and OH. Do you happen to have an Elizabeth Lamprey, b. 22 Feb 1790 who married a Rev. Thomas Simpson in Nov, 1809. He worked as a carpenter in Concord, NH, in 1816, he fell, and became crippled for life-afterwards became a Congregational minister. He was a son of Major John Simpson (he was a private during the Rev War, & fired the first shot at the Battle of Bunker Hill-disobeying orders while doing so-sered with honor thereafter and rose to the rank of Major) I have a lot on the Simpson's if you care to have anything. I apologize for not having anything on the Lamprey's[Elizabeth]. I believe this is the same family you are speaking about. I will have your name on file if you would like to share any info. I am going to search the Lamprey family in the near future and will pass on anything that I find. 1. Re: FOSS family and their origins(pre-1700)
    2. Harman Clark
    3. On "origins" of FOSS, here are a few comments: We have found three main "sources" for the Foss family. The most reliable is the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire [Noyes-Libby-Davis] at page 240. Parsons also has a section on the Foss Family in his History of Rye, N.H., page 344+. The least reliable seems to be a typewritten copy of a manuscript in possession of the NEHGS, Boston, entitled "Genealogy Of The Foss Family Of America" compiled by Guy S. Rix, Concord, N.H. These three works have considerable differences. According to the Dix paper, John Foss was born in Rebe, Denmark, Jan. 3, 1638, and "it is said by tradition that he arrived in Boston, Mass., on a Brittish war vessel, on which he was employed as a calker. While the vessel was lying in Boston Harbar, he deserted by jumping overboard and swimming ashore, escaping further service." Dix also gives his first wife as Mary Chabourn, born in 1644, daughter of William and Mary Chadbourn, and granddaughter of William Chadbourn who came over in the employ of Capt. John Mason to build a mill at Newichwannock (South Berwick, Me.)." Dix goes on to state that he married, second, Jan 25, 1686, to Sarah Goss, widow of James Goss, as recorded in probate records of York County, Maine, page 103, book one and "He married third, Elizabeth Berry, daughter of William and Jane Berry, and widow of John Locke, who was killed by Indians on Dover Plains, June 26, 1696." [In addition to obvious errors, the Danish ancestry seems to be without foundation or documentation, and the Dix paper is not considered reliable]. Noyes-Libby-Davis, at page 240, has him as "+\- 30 in 1666, +\- 46 in 1680, first app. in division of 1661 as of 1657, likely in his wife's right. . . . He m. Mary Berry (12), grantor with him in 1673, liv. (or his son's w.) in 1700." They show Mary as the sister of Elizabeth Berry who married John Locke. This is consistent with the Locke Genealogy and other sources, and Dix is clearly in error. Parsons, in his History of Rye, page 345, simply states that John Foss "being pleased with the location, came to Rye, where he was admitted into the family of John Berry, and married his daughter." [Actually she was William Berry's daughter; John Berry was a son of William]. I am interested in what others may have on this family. Harman Clark P.O. 3. Hi Brian, I am also interested in the Foss' also. Do you have a Josiah Foss in your line you are researching? The Josiah Foss I am looking for was born around mid 1700's and married into the Bartlett family and lived in Thetford, Vt. before moving to Derby, Vt. I believe this Josiah was possibly born in Strafford or Rockingham County, NH. Anything you might have will be greatly appreciated. 3. Seeking information on Rhoda DAVIS b.1790 in Chester NH. She married a Joseph PAGE in Haverhill,Essex Co.,MA in 1808.The puzzle is this;she is listed as GRIFFIN some places and DAVIS in others;some of her children have DAVIS as a middle name, none have GRIFFIN; there is one child with INGERSOLL as a middle name; her ONLY brother,James DAVIS,Esq. is listed as a guest at her eightieth birthday party; a great nephew Fred DAVIS MacGREGOR was also a guest at this party. Rhoda died at the advanced age of 92 in Ayer's Village, Haverhill,Essex Co.,MA. 1. MARSTONs of Hampton, etc,
    2. Dick Marston
    3. Hi: A labor of love is almost complete. All the MARSTONs of The Marston Genealogy who descend from Captain William MARSTON, Sr., plus descendants of all of his County Norfolk (England) cousins have now been uploaded in gedcom format to the "Marston Room" of Marston Manor. William's ancestors are taken back to 1435. All have been cross-referenced, corrected, and updated from such sources as "Marston English Ancestry," "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire," "The Drake Family of New Hampshire," Dow's "History of Hampton," Pierce's "Batchelder, Batcheller Genealogy," and articles from "The New Hampshire Genealogical Record," and others. Only descendants of John "The Mariner" of Salem, Mass., and the miscellaneuos MARSTONs in TMG remain to be added. I hope to complete the remainder of the project before Thanksgiving or by the end of November at the latest. -- Dick Marston, Marston Manor: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1638/
