DRAKE? Did somebody mention the name DRAKE? That woke me up! :-) On checking the very authoritative "The Drake Family of New Hampshire," NHHS's publication by Alice Smith Thompson in 1962, at page 35, she tells us that Captain Anthony BRACKETT, husband of Susannah DRAKE, died at Falmouth, now Portland, ME, on Sept. 9, 1689, while fighting indians. No mention, however, about a massacre. There is more on that subject at pages 227-228 (Chap. XIII) of Dow's "History of Hampton." That may be on-line now at Lane Library's web site - I haven't checked. Some of what you have included above may have come from Dow's account. Under Anthony's genealogy at pg. 614 it is mentioned that he, his wife, a negro and 5 of his children were carried away as prisoners on August 9, 1676. He, his wife, the negro and 1 child managed to escape the following November. Mrs. BRACKETT died soon thereafter, and he married Susannah DRAKE on Nov. 9, 1678. Hope this helps some. -- Dick Marston

    1. Looking for DENNETT - Also have lots to share.
    2. Charles R Dennett
    3. Happy New Year, everyone. It's been a while since I posted looking for information so I thought I'd take this opportunity. I've collected data on the DENNETT surname and in the process gatherd lots of other names. I've turned my data into web pages and they can be found at http://members.aol.com/cdennett/genealogy . Feel free to browse if you have research interests in coastal NH, southern ME and surrounding areas. There is a large list of surnames there with all of them linked to the appropriate pages. Maybe you'll find something you didn't know before. If you have any data on DENNETT, I'd love to hear from you. Particularily, if you have any information on a Winburn DENNETT (b. 1824) of Berwick, ME (his wife was Martha DURGIN,) his father Winburn DENNETT (his wife was Sarah FROST. No indication if they were Jr./Sr. or not) or any of their ancestors I would really love to hear from you. I dead end at Winburn the elder, yet have lots of other DENNETT info back to England in the mid 1600s. Thanks! -- Charlie Dennett - Rochester, NY Dennett Family History - http://members.aol.com/cdennett/genealogy Colonial ME/NH to present. 1. Brackett Massacre Burial Ground
    2. Joyce -- Thanks for the prompt response. I am very interested in any available information on the massacre, including a list of the individuals killed in that massacre. Anthony Brackett (the immigrant) was my 7th great-grandfather. According to the rather sketchy information which I currently have, there were sixteen members of Goodman Brackett's and Goodman Rand's families either killed or carried away in an Indian attack in September of 1691. Is there much information on the massacre in the description you mentioned in the book on the history of Rye? My Mother and I were in New England in March, and were able to make an all too brief visit to the burial ground as we were traveling through New Hampshire. Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to do any research in the area while we were there. FYI, other family surnames I am researching in New England in that same time period include Drake, Libby and Merrill. Thanks again -- Vickie in Texas

    3. Heritage Books, Inc. published "History of the Town of Rye, New Hampshire, from its Discovery and Settlement to December 31, 1903. In Chapter XIV, page 245, there is a description of the massacre, which took place in 1692. Anthony Brackett was killed and buried on the eastern side of the highway, which is now Brackett Road. I don't know if his grave is marked. There is a small graveyard near the intersection of Brackett and Pioneer Roads but I believe it is of much later origin. Is there any particular information you need? I'll try to help. Joyce Davies ---------- > Does anyone know where I might find historical information in the referenced > cemetery? 2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear List, This posting was sent to the YORKSGen and I found it sufficiently interesting to post here. The naming patterns might prove useful in clearing some doubts - at least they might help with clues! Magdalena From: "dwcraig" <dwcraig@globalnet.co.uk> To: YORKSGEN-L@rootsweb.com I have found that a lot of my ancestors used the following naming pattern, which was posted a while ago, while yours is nearly an exact copy of mine, this post includes English and Scottish Naming Patterns which I hope will help you as much as it has helped me. I am indebted to the original poster whose name I cannot remember! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- British Naming Patterns: First Son - Father's father First Daughter - Mother's mother Second Son - Mother's father Second Daughter - Father's mother Third Son - Father Third Daughter - Mother Fourth Son - Father's oldest brother Fourth Daughter - Mother's oldest sister Scotland Naming Pattern: First Son - Father's father Second Son - Mother's father Third Son - Father Fourth Son - Father's eldest brother Fifth Son - Father's 2nd oldest brother or Mother's oldest brother First Daughter - Mother's mother Second Daughter - Father's mother Third Daughter - Mother Fourth Daughter - Mother's eldest sister Fifth Daughter - Mother's 2nd oldest sister or Father's oldest sister In some cases you will find the naming order is reversed with the first and second children, i.e. the First-born son being named after the Mother's father and the Second-born son named after the Father's father. If this is the case then the daughters are also usually reversed.

    2. Dick Marston
    3. Rockin' Rooters: 1) While I can't help feeling I've just given up something by way of web page design, I also think the change may result in a page which is less annoying to use. At least one of you sent me a message complaining about the constant "pop-up" advertisements that appeared whenever you viewed the Rockingham county GenWeb page. While I agreed, I felt the issue was beyond my control. Today, however, I decided to try the GeoCities banner-exchange program through its GeoGuide tool. Now the Geocities ads appear in a smaller space at the top of the pages, and they don't keep interfering with other parts of the pages you may be interested in viewing. Your comments addressed to be privately would be appreciated if you have an opinion as to whether matters have improved or been made worse by the change. Remember, the ads posted are rotated by GeoCities. While I can limit them to material suitable for viewing by children, that's the extent of my control. Most of them will have nothing at all to do with genealogy. 2) NHROCKIN subscriptions are still inching toward 300. We're now at 291. 3) I've shortened the time for the frequency the digest form of this list will be mailed to you NHROCKIN-D types (from 24 to 18 hours). Comments to me privately from those of you on the D list are welcome. Thanks for your support and your help! It should be a great new year. -- Dick Marston, Rockingham County, NH, County GenWeb Pages: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/1706/; Rockingham County, NH, Mail List (NHROCKIN) Owner.
